Does anybody know which other british aircraft are painted in Garuda colours this year? I thought there was normally more than one?
Andrew
It’s supposed to be heathrow, i’m fairly sure it was actually filmed there.
Unfortunately it doesn’t seem to be available any more. It was on YouTube, but appears to have been removed (understandably)
The video was a parody of band aid’s “feed the world” and was very funny…
But while I was watching it I was thinking to myself “how did they get permission to film some of those airside shots?”. I presume this is where the problem lies? It featured a BAA security vehicle messing about on the taxiway (and possibly the runway… I can’t really remember) – i suspect it has less to do with the parody and the fact that it was recorded and broadcast, but rather what there were pictured doing… even if it hadn’t been recorded I expect they would have been in trouble if someone had seen…
While I was watching it I assumed it was actually trick photography and that it was shot in a car park somewhere, but perhaps not…
B77W please PM me to let me know if I’m on the right tracks

Where is the IL76 parked in the first photo? Is it on the apron near the short stay car park or is it down where the DHL normally parks?
Don’t get me wrong – I’m not against interesting colours! I love WN’s flags, I liked FR’s billboards, I have nothing against the Star Alliance logojets.
Let’s not forget OK-DGL. It was a livery celebrating the airline’s heritage, but certainly wasn’t a “retro-jet”. Similarly, US Airways have painted up A320s in the colours of their predecessors but the Cactus livery certainly couldn’t be considered “Retro”.
I even think that a BA BOAC 777 would be a little bit different.
I guess I just wish the airlines would use a bit more imagination – the first few Retrojets were different… now we get one from any airline approaching a birthday divisable by 5!
Is nobody else getting just a little tired of Retrojets? IMHO it’s been done so many times that it just exhibits a complete lack of imagination amongst the airlines.
90 years seems like a strange anniversary to want to celebrate – how are they going to celebrate 100 years?
10 Years, 50 Years, 75 years, and 100 years are all fine… but 90 years seems a bit random!
Just my thoughts
Andrew
Hi all,
Thanks for all the advice (and encouragement!)
The BA 777 is relatively easy to fix (or will be in future – looking at the originals that one was unfortunately a non-starter because I’d zoomed in too far in the first place).
I’m having a bit of trouble getting the USM to work. I might need to reinstall the program or something because whenever I try and use it I get a message saying “An Internal Error has Occurred”. Once I have some new shots I’ll upload them here 🙂
As for the fire training rig… Let’s imagine a 747 mixed with a DC10…
One last point – I can strongly recommend the Runway 08 Crash Gate spot at Gatwick from where these shots were taken. The lighting was great and the traffic was quite interesting during the late morning because most of what I was photographing on departure had arrived well before I could have arrived.
Thanks again for all the feedback. I really appreciate you all giving your time!
Andrew
Hi Paul,
That’s great advice. The shots are all cropped from the originals by 10 to 20 percent so there’s lots of room to repair that element.
I use Fireworks. I just use the standard “sharpen” feature which would explain the over sharpening. It has a USM tool, so I’d be interested to try out your “catch almost all” values!
Obviously I’m quite happy with my shots for my own personal collection and haven’t really spent much time editing before. I’d like to start uploading to the large web databases so your advice is invaluable.
Thanks for your help,
Andrew
are you using Vista? it’s a pain like that… you need to right click in the Aircraft folder > properties > security
to change permissions, click edit
select Users(YourName/Users) and tick all the boxes for “Allow”, If it asks you if you want to apply the settings to all subfolders, say yes
good luck 🙂
Thanks all, that’s fantastic! Always wondered what it was for and thought that it couldn’t possibly just be the cargo doors opening!

Hi Erik,
Having visited all these airports, I’d recommend Heathrow, Gatwick, and Manchester – There aren’t many airlines you will miss out on that way!
Stansted is very interesting in the early morning and late evening, but other than that you won’t see much other than Ryanair and Easyjet. I’d also recommend considering Glasgow, mainly because spotting there is so easy and there are some quite nice backgrounds to be had!
I have spotting guides for all of these airports online:

Gatwick: http://andrew-butcher.fotopic.net/p50238082.html

Let me know if I can help any more
