Am I missing something?
How can Aeroflot and various other russian carriers be allowed so many services into Germany and Austria if the national carriers of those countries have limitations placed on them if they want to fly into russia?
Surely something like this has to work both ways, no?
Are cabin/wing views OK to post, Andrew?
Definitely!
A nice idea…
You’ve got to love the Mail on Sunday’s spin on this:
It really bugs me when a plane carrying 90 human beings crashes and all the british media focusses on is the number of British people on board!
Incidently, this doesn’t normally happen when a plane crashes in the US, so what they are really reporting is the number of westerners, or “white people” on board. It really annoys me how the western media take the western public to be so short sighted.
You do have to smile at the language used in this article though…
“British father-of-three on airliner carrying 90 people that burst into flames and crashed into the ocean”
…the ocean? The Mediterranean Ocean? nuff said…
Is it just me?
As the one who started the Airline of the Week threads from which these threads have spawned I’d like to add my two cents.
The original limit of 1 Photo for the PIA thread was so largely ignored that I decided to increase the limit depending on the airline for future weeks.
This week we’re looking for qantas pictures so it is silly to have all us Europeans and Americans posting all our A380 and Boeing 747 shots, many taken at LHR with many of the same angle.
One of the things I love about these threads is that we’re encouraging posts from people who don’t normally upload. These threads aren’t about showcasing a.net or jp.net quality photos, they’re about encouraging a community spirit of people uploading shots, regardless of whether or not they think they’re “good enough”.
I’ve been really pleased with the responses to these threads, but if there are 20 posts (???) per page and everyone uploads 5 pictures, that’s 100 pictures to load. And that’s just crazy!
So let’s be polite, and lets not have anyone taking over. I’m 100% with PMN on this, but if you absolutely must post more than the stated number of pictures (and i can’t think why anyone would), at least external links don’t take up too much bandwidth (but i assure you that i’m leaving it to you to choose your best shots, and i’m not clicking on any of these links).
It’s all about self-screening. In the case of the MD11 thread, what’s the point in one individual uploading all their UPS pictures?
I spend a good few minutes picking my best or most diverse shots. As should everyone else. I have 106 A320 shots on my website, shall I just upload all of those?
Another quite difficult choice…
Soon to be a thing of the past…
This one flew JetBlue’s first service between JFK and FLL back in 2000
And this one’s just a bit different
Good Idea, Andrew!
Not easy picking 3 737s… here goes…
An excellent start.
My one suggestion would be to shoot with the sun behind you. This isn’t easy from the AVP at Manchester, but if you photograph aircraft as they taxi out from the stands, the lighting will generally be better.
If the light is on the side of the aircraft, the details stand out a lot more.
This isn’t a terribly good example (someone else may have a better one) but look at the picture below. The JetBlue Airbus is in full sun, but the Delta aircraft behind is in the shadow. You can see the details are much clearer on the Airbus because the sun is shining on it:
If you have a car, there are lots of much better spots at Manchester where the lighting issues won’t be a problem
Flew on a WN service about 4 years ago from Oakland to Phoenix. Obviously most of the passengers were leisure travellers and the crew really pilled on the humour.
“This is your captain speaking. We’re now in the cruise and about to fly over the Edwards Air Force Base [where the space shuttle had very recently landed]. If I bank the plane those on the right hand side of the aircraft will have a nice view of the airfield, and those on the left hand side of the aircraft have a great view of all the passengers on the right hand side looking out of the window!!”
with the Christmas day attemped plot to blow up a plane, i think it is a bit naughty that over here in the UK cheese strings have an advert running where a cartoon cheese string keeps telling a dumb check in girl he is carrying milk, and it takes an age before she alerts security:eek:
Cartoon cheese? I thought he was real 🙂
I’d like to make a point on “Self Moderation” if I may.
Take a look at the “Airline of the Week” threads in the photography section. So that the threads don’t get too big, and don’t take too long to load, and to give all members the opportunity to contribute something a bit different, I set a limit on these threads of two pictures each.
Most contributors stick to this. But every week one or two people will upload significantly more pictures.
This is a very simple issue of self moderation – and one which can be seen across the photo forum. I suspect that one of the sparks which set off this discussion was the request that we self moderate our pictures, and this is a very simple example of where people are failing to do this.
I won’t name names, but what is the point of uploading to the forum several pictures of the same airline/aircraft type from a similar angle? (in the context of Airline of the Week?)
Whether or not moderators are being too heavy handed I don’t know, but if contributors thought about their postings carefully then it wouldn’t be necessary
You can resolve the sun problems just by walking under the bridge and up the verge on the other side. You can’t miss the bridge from the terminal 🙂
Excellent shots also possible from an area just next to the terminal overlooking the stands where Wizz and Monarch tend to park (and other aircraft taxi by on the Delta taxiway).
Full details can be found here:
Big brownie points for anyone who can work out the aircraft type of Paul’s second shot.
I have figured it out, but it took me about 10 minutes 😡
The STN service was scrapped years ago. I’ve been photographing aircraft there for the last 8 years and the service was stopped before i started
