Hmmm… how did you conclude its a slotted array???

Just because the earlier version of the E-8 used slotted array doesn’t automatically mean the Y-8 platform would have the same equipement.

it will be to damn heavy for the aircraft to carry two large PESA (or AESA) antenna,if need more powerful engine, and the ideal platform will be commercial jet aircraft.
2 years ago, someone posted brief history of SAR development in China, one is pod mounted SAR carry by Y-7/8,the other version carry underneath the TU-154
it feature back to back slotted antenna, the construction look very simple, both are adapted for civilian use.-such as construction of three gorge water dam.
it is assume that Y-8 may also use the same slotted antenna.

according to janes intelligent review, soviet cruise missile produced in the 80’s do not possess DSMAC,(digital scene matching) similiar to tomahawk, and there accuracy is limited to 25 meter CEP,but that doesnot matter, since the cruise missile was intend to be fitted with nuclear warhead.
but the latest generation such as KH-555 may finally possess a DSMAC for terminal flight.
combat debut was in 1995 chenchya war.

Good! China’s JSTARS,E-8,(Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System)

most airborne ground mapping radar use X-band in order to obtain better resolution, already E-8 will be upgraded with AESA radar, while PLAAF “E-8” radar antenna remain a mystery, probably use slotted array antenna similiar to early version of E-8,equally I am surprise they choose Y-8 rather than TU-154 (or even airbus!) as platform.

    Flogger,
You are off in your fantasy world again. No Yugolsav pilot made any claim against any F-117. Your claims of MiG-29 claiming Tornadoes is also dubious.
Colonel Dani Zoltan was the commander of the SA-3 unit that shot down F-117 82-806. It was only after the conflict that the alias used at the time was revealed. The Serbian alias ‘Gvozden Djukic’ had been used to describe the ethnic Hungarian commander in some propaganda articles. This was apparently in an effort to hide his ethnicity. It was the propaganda ghost writers and Russian articles that made ‘Gvozden Djukic’ a MiG-29 pilot.

This was the propaganda put out at the time:

“Lt.Col. Gvozden Djukic: “Suddenly I saw a dot of light in the sky, and I headed by aircraft towards it. I realized that I was doing a head-on attack. The first missile I fired against it struck it in that head-on course.”

Few hours later Gvozden Djukic (and the whole world) knew due to the TV coverage that his victim had been one of the -until that time- considered invincible stealth fighters F-117A Nighthawks. After that it was clear that the stealth fighter was neither invisible nor immune to the helmet-mounted gunsight of the MiG-29 and their missiles R-73 Archer .”

I do recalled quote from israel AF officer after the 1967 air war,”Even if we exchange equipment(aircraft),the result will be same”
same can be said of air war in serbia or iraq war, assume the NATO pilots or USAF flying the MIG,while the serbian or iraqi pilot flying the F-15,the outcome will probably same.massive lost for the iraqi (or serbian)
any USAF aircraft flying into iraq or serbia without support from AWACS and escort jammer will be sitting duck

this WZ-10 shot’s doesn’t look liked a new pictures but a crop and enlarge from a previous pictures posted already in thread still the WZ-10 look very modern and good looking.

the original prototype was first seen 3 (4?)years ago,but with retractable wheel very similiar to Z-9,and a small nose cone .the latest picture probably a standard variant.

The problem with the Mig-29s was reliability, and budget – to keep them operational would have stretched the budget too far, and Russia was starting to kick up a fuss about non-Russian firms doing anything to Migs… (They were particularly upset that countries would choose to get Israeli upgrades, rather than send them back to Russia).

I sincerely hope that the Rumanians will be able to get a decent number, hopefully enough to keep a real air force. About 48 would be a very good start…

according to military technology, after the reunification of germany, the german AF while high praise for MIG-29 manueverity, found the air crat very expensive to maintain, more expensive than F-4 phantom.

A-2-S: I think cruise missiles will be used but will have limited impact on the air defense assets because of the lack of intelligence..

On the MiG-31 Qtn here is a link:

    http://www.irandefence.net/showthread.php?t=645

There have been sporadic reports about Mig31 presence over Iran. The most recent report which was provided by UAE Air Force officials told the story of one of their pilots who could spot a fast flying Iranian fighter close to the Abu Musa Island in the Persian Gulf. The UAE pilot could clearly see the Iranian fighter flying in parallel and after a short period turning deeply into the Iranian airspace. The pilot who was on a routine surveillance and photography mission could not take any pictures of the fighter but he was almost sure it was a Mig31 and not a F-14, Su27 or Mig 29 which normally appear in the Iranian sky.

Israeli defense analysts have long tried to find out about the current capabilities of the Iranian Air Force and has therefore installed highly sensitive radars in the Iraqi Kurdistan close to Iran in order to better study the Iranian radar grids after the failed US unmanned flights into Iran which had the purpose to provoke the Iranians to turn on their radars in order for Americans to study the Iranian radar grids. However the Iranians never turned on their radars and in some rare cases they only turned on fixed radar batteries on a point wise fashion(one at a time) in order to just track the intruder’s path without giving any information about the networked air defense system.

Once the presence of Israeli experts and equipments inside Iraqi Kurdistan was confirmed in September the Iranians continue to keep their ground radar systems off, but instead increased their aerial presence in order to ensure the enemy understands the Iranian air defense system is not purely relying on its ground network. The Iranian F-14s were flying 2-3 times the normal rate at high altitudes inside Iran close to the Western and South-Western border. This was combined by high level of activities of low flying Iranian F-4s and F-5s ensuring visual contact with any low flying object entering Iranian airspace. As the Israelis and Americans were collecting data on Iranian radar capabilities, during a night in October, they could, for up to 15 minutes, spot four high flying objects close to the Iranian Western border with their radars on. The surprising fact was that the airplanes were present at an even distance of 200 km from each other and covering an amazing area of 900 kilometers from Northwest to the Southwest border of Iran by hooking up their radars. The experts were shocked by this exercise which obviously and purposefully sent out a message to the other side ensuring the attackers understand the Iranian aerial radar capabilities could during a high-alert situation become active in minutes and cover a large area.

Later on the experts were confused on how the Iranians could achieve such a degree of aerial radar capabilities as their current stock of fighters did not have any such capability. As they continued to look for an answer they could all agree on the fact that the non-confirmed Mig31 must be present in the Iranian Air Force’s inventory as that would be the only potential aircraft in Iran capable of hooking its radar and covering such a vast area.

JDW report that iran is upgrading there F-14 and F-14 with russian radar system and engine,is there picture of it?

from 1991 to 2004 ,iraq been target of US massive aerial bombing ,yet when iraq finally fall to Us invasion, there’s a lot surprise to discover several site capable of producing chemical or biology weapon (dual use)manage to escape ,or suffer little damage in 13 year of unrelentless US lead air strike.
what happen to Iraq air war is analogy what will happen to iran, but iran learn a lot from what they have observe, equally iran has bigger land mass than iraq, some smaller nuclear plant will indeed survive, and that’s going to be problem, the only solution, will be all out invasion.

    Vympel,

The fact that I dont know everything that is written in Igla propaganda by heart doesn’t mean I don’t know anything about the performance of the only sufarce-to-air missile that currently equipies Brazilian Army and Air Force. :p
And if you pay a little more attention to my previous post, in fact, you will realize that I’ve said some really good things about the SA-18. 😉

    Regards,
    Primer

latest victim was US army Apache helos downed by SA-16,Iraqi insurgent video the downing ,show the Apache was flying at low altitude when missile struck, killiling both pilot,(one if green-card pilot)this despite the fact AH-64 is carrying full suite IRCM.
According to janes, igla is more expensive than Stinger, making the first time that russian make weapon is more expensive than there US couynterpart.

Based on the systems that the Russians field TODAY compared to the very little known Chinese systems in field service today.. Avionics is not only RADAR/ONBOARD COMPUTERS/FBW/HUD/HMD etc etc..

Chinese scientists/engineers may have betterd the performance in some areas.. but there is some way to go..

Russian and ukrainian engineers play important role in the development aircraft such L-15 (Yakolev),J-10 ,JH-7A (sukhoi) and Y8X(antonov). and will continue to do so in the next decade.

Hear the areport the EF-2000 slightly more expensive than super hornet, this may be reason why there’s public out cry in austria over the austrian AF decision to purchase EF-2000.
