There are very very few conflicts in which one side is 100% right and other 100% wrong.

True. That’s one good reason why it can be hard to ever “win” a debate like those we’ve been having here.

Interesting blog by Swedish foreign minister Carl Bildt (scroll down to “The principles at stake”):

    – Russian airborne and armoured units are entering Senaki, “in order to prevent Georgian forces to impede on the Russian peace enforcement mission” as the Cmdr of the Russian forces in Abkhazia (see below) was quoted as saying.

    Peace enforcement or peacekeeping?

The peacekeeping mission in South Ossetia aside, have the Russians designated their offensive operations as peace enforcement?

I think a few of the posts in this thread belong here

Do the multiple references to Kosovo, Bosnia, the U.S. / the West really belong in this thread?

Let someone bail me out on this question. The U.S has the latest and the so called most powerful hyper superiority 5th generation fighter in F-22 the only and one and only of its kind in the world, no nation comes close. The only stealth bomber B2,no nation comes ahead,Tridents ICBMs no nation comes close, everything no nation comes close . Why can’t the U.S sneak through Turkey and bomb Russia out of hell and give ultimatum- 3 days I mean to Russia else their fate is doomed. They easily did this to Serbia and Yugoslavia. 2000 civilians dead in Georgia, why, why.

All generals of the U.S know Russia has crap heap. Nothing works there, air force is of no significance, tanks rusted with T-55s and T-72s,even general Collin power said their ICBMs are rusted and cannot fly, Chechenia even defeated them.. And yet the U.S the so called and vaunted world’s only hyperpower is doing nothing militarily to help an ally who they have unshakeable commitment to. 2000 soldiers in Iraq the 3rd largest, the only real democracy in the Cacauses. Shaskavilli is now looking for a reward from the buddy America, and is not coming, why?,why?why ?

Do you think it’s fair to compare Serbia and Montenegro with Russia today?

AFAIK, the civilian casualty numbers from South-Ossetia are based on statements from sources in Russia and South-Ossetia.

Why do you say that the Russian military is of no significance? Over-confidence is no good.

The CNN reporter is now asking Russia’s Embassador why are they bombing targets in Georgia and Tibilisi far from the war zone in Ossetia and they never asked why NATO bombed Belgrade which was also quite far from the fronts?

I’m not dead sure about this, but I think NATO chose to take the fight to Belgrade due to a lack of success against Serb units in Kosovo. Attacking enemy military and industrial sites, infrastructure etc. is an option if the objective is to reduce the enemy’s ability to conduct warfare. You want to cut supply lines, communications and take out enemy forces in the rear before they can be deployed to the battle area.

AFAIK, the Russians have been hitting military airfields and infrastructure in Georgia, among other things. Whether these operations are based on clear military objectives or simply meant to send a message, I don’t know.

And everbody is in the same boat. It’s depressing i feel like it’s the end of the world:eek:

I think many people felt the same way when NATO launched ALLIED FORCE in 1999. Remember how the Russians got fired up?

As kev says, don’t worry about it.

    Back to the issue:

I’ve noticed that some people have begun comparing this conflict with the events in Kosovo in 1999. I know too little about Georgia and South-Ossetia to discuss this accurately.

Are the Russians right in accusing Georgia of “ethnic cleansing” in South-Ossetia, e.g. based on the current refugee situation? Can they reason that Georgian forces have deliberately engaged in ethnic cleansing of people in South-Ossetia, or are we hearing rethorics made to fit the fact that many civilians are trying to get away? You would normally expect that sort of thing to happen in heavily exposed areas such as Tskhinvali.

Terrific posters, Steve. Shame they don’t make them like that anymore. 😀

The last movie I saw was Saving Private Ryan from 1998. I had forgotten how great it really is.

Southwest asia?, are you referring to the middle east?

I’m not familiar with the boundaries of the Middle East, so I often refer to Southwest Asia instead.

As for the rest of your post: I have no idea. I just have the impression that the U.S. wants to reduce its dependency on oil supplies from that area. I’ll get back to you if I remember why..

Let me quickly post something being circulated in mosques here in the UK because of bush’s visit to the mideast, tell me what is wrong with the khalifa vision, because vast majority of muslims want this. A legitimate government of the people in the region would end this war on terror as quick as it begun.

Whoever wrote it seems to be very confident about U.S. interests in the region. Isn’t it true that the U.S. seeks to reduce its oil dependency, especially in Southwest Asia?

Guys with Igla missiles stationed around the most important targets could do a much better job, I think.

Which systems carry the “Igla”-name? Being ignorant, I mainly connect that name/designation to SHORAD systems. I won’t speculate about their effectiveness against e.g. cruise missiles, but what about aircraft operating at high altitudes?
