old eagle
I too was at Syerston in 61, maybe I even helped you strap in. Only a very young rigger SAC then of course, just out of training.

Anyway, the only pic I have of that time is shown below. Hope it brings back some memories for you, it certainly does for me.

By the way, I’d also be interested in any pics of Syerston during that period.

The incident at Syerston was caused by the skin stripping off the stbd wing, nothing to do with G forces (or only peripherally). In fact, the Vulc, VX770, was doing a slightly fast flyby.

Happened just before I was posted to Syerston (on Piston and Jet Provosts), some of the ground crew blokes were still there and said they’d spent two days walking the airfield picking up bits. These bits included such things as flying boots with bits still in them. Nasty incident all round. The only pic I’ve ever seen is . . .

Was the name Canberra a marketing ploy to sell the type to Australia ?

Yes.

. . . and

…So I wonder if there was a conscious consideration of the Aussie market?

Yes.

Memory cards and the like hold their data magnetically. X-ray machines use high energy radiation of an order which has no significant magnetic component.

I would however advise against leaving memory cards lying on or next to desk telephones, TV sets or hi-fi loudspeakers.

Has she been repainted or is she not going to be ?

Yes.

When the fin tip is completed and fitted the ‘frame will be painted yellow.

. . . also Canberra PR.7 is now in 31 Squadron markings [work done by a guy from Lincoln and the North Hykeham ATC].

The PR.7 is WH791. It was repainted and given the ident of WH792, by permission of the owners, for the 31 Sqn 90th Anniversary. WH791 was never a 31 Sqn aircraft, but has been re-serialed to depict WH792, which was. A re-paint was part of the deal. I believe it will stay in 31 Sqn markings for a couple of years.

Viggen
I visited last week for the 31 Sqn get together at Newark. Not much was happening whilst I was there though so I tootled around the place. Ref the Viggen . . . took these at that time, they maybe complement those already posted.

Canberra
Also took a few of the PR.7 (as you’d expect 😉 ). Looks tidy externally but could do with some work in the cockpit.

🙁

The B(I)8, XM278, ended up by being sold to Peru. Potted history for those interested . . .
XM278, ready for collection on 25 February 1959, was taken on charge by the MoD and issued to 16 Sqn then resident at RAFG Laarbruch. This B(I)8 spent its RAF life with each of the B(I)8 Strike Squadrons, initially 16 Sqn, then 14 Sqn (RAFG Wildenrath) and finally 3 Sqn (RAFG Geilenkirchen/Laarbruch). When 3 Sqn converted to Harriers in 1972 XM278, along with many other B(I)8s, was transferred to RAF St Athan where, on 16 May 1972 it was designated as Non-Effective Aircraft. After languishing for nearly two years, XM278 was sold to Marshalls of Cambridge on 3 April 1974. Marshalls converted XM278 to B(I)68 configuration after which it was test flown as G52-12 and delivered to Peru as No 257 on 5 July 1978.
Well of course. It’s not an undercarriage so Gordy wouldn’t be that high.

The ‘Line-Up’ pic

I reckon it was at Cottesmore’s 1973 BoB Open Day.

The Canberra (next to the Victor) is a T.17 looking quite smart in shiny camo scheme. This was a 360 Sqn aircraft (all T.17’s were) and the shiny look and white undersides leads me to think it is fairly ‘new’. 360 Sqn moved to Cotty in April 1969 (and later moved to Wyton in September 1975). I have some pics of T.17’s of that era and all look nice and shiny as their ECM use was still ramping up. The presence of a T.17 may indicate that it’s at its home base as they only actually did a few airshows being quite heavily tasked.

I can just make out faint markings on the Can’s nose door. This would be its serial number and these began to be painted on there (I think) around 72/73. Pity it’s not a higher res scan.

Very tenuous thinking I know, but the dates equate with others given in this thread so I’ll nominate Cottesmore, BoB Open, 1973.

Final

That’s it. F-104 now in presentable state again for the next couple of years.

Should explain that the external paintwork wasn’t the only task carried out on this mini-refurb. Preparatory tasks included changing the nosewheel, some work and fettling on the the main wheels and legs (they were a mess of corrosion), re-furbishing the canopy and many other small (but important) TLC tasks behind various panels

Some pix showing the ‘frame in all its glory with full markings, serials etc. Of notice is the internal condition of the C/B box panel.

So, what’s next for the A Team? The Whirlwind. Bit of a challange that will be.

I was pretty close to you then by the sounds.

What sounds?

Are we going to see any of your pix then Ollie?

Well, with the obvious number of forum blokes at the thing I wish I’d met up with you all. Could have then relied on a concentrated ‘tractor-pull’ to get me off the grounds!
