Les – nice shots – were you the gent in the buggy trying to snap pics of a young relative in between snapping pics of the aircraft?
We’re really going to have to get some form of recognition symbol or summat. Must have been dozens of forumites there that day.
Yup, Regal, that would be me letting the scooty’s batt refresh itself. Young relative was 9 mnth old granddaughter. Very pleased to find she wasn’t put off by all the noise, seemed to enjoy it in fact. Pointed at most things and went “Coo” – which seemed to sum it all up really.
.
belive it or not, its at Sywell
Cute but not helpful.
Sywell village is a couple of miles out on the west side of Wellingborough bypass.
.
The other aircraft is a Canberra.
.
What about this place?
.
Must agree, outstanding air show, first ‘all prop’ show I’ve been to.
Good to meet with you Albert, and many thanks.
Two things . . .
Thing 1 – The grass was very soggy after the morning’s rain so I couldn’t get around as much as I would have liked – mobility scooty thing needs caterpillar tracks I guess, totally defeated by the soggy grass, kept digging in, so no traction and dead batt.
Thing 2 – SkyTech’s little helo sat running it’s noisy gas turbine engine right in front of our section of the crowd all the way through the Spitfire’s excellent display. Crowd at my end couldn’t hear the Merlin. Lot of muttering videocam owners around us.
Apart from that (and missing meeting the delightful CathB again, but my wife did I understand) the whole day was stunning – weather, crowd, displays, organisation. Couldn’t have asked for better.
Well done the troops of Sywell, will definitely go again (on dryer grass though  )
Good one. In that case Ollie, may I suggest that in future you think a bit before posting. You will benefit from this approach and, maybe, will cease being the recipient of ribald comment.
.
and the Me262 did not have dihedral as far as i can remember.
Ollie
The 262 had swept wings, the effect you’re seeing is a comination of the sweep-back and John’s use of a wide angle lens close to the nose of the beast. Nothing intrinsically ‘wrong’ with the pic, just optical illusion. The apparent depth of field should also have given you a clue. OK?
.
There was also the Boulton Paul P113.
Overly complex bit of kit but the Vulcan had ten of them.
.
Hmmm. Well, it’s a Boulton Paul aircraft, and they originally made wooden sheds, so I think a fine ‘wood’ effect with thick brown paint and serrated scraper board would be appropriate.
But in the end they made garage doors! The research for these is evident in the ‘D’ door up-lock linkage shown here.
Mmmm . . . the BP111A was obviously a flying test-bed to test garage door linkages in high wind speeds . . . . :diablo:
Time for my pills.
Have some of mine . . .
Ordered mine today by phone. Very nice and helpful lady (Kathy?) was ultra efficient. Thanks for that.
If anybody else on the forum is going, come say “Hi” to a fat bloke on a motobility scooter (but beware of getting in front of me as braking’s not it’s best point)
Damien, see you there. That’ll be twice this year – we’re gonna have to stop meeting like this!
🙂
…….so would the Vulcan !!!!! 😉
Mmmm . . .five exclamation marks. Reckon that’s banter then, eh?
Anyway, I think they should all be white. All that camo with non-blended demarcations. Tut-tut, I don’t know . . .
.
…so we have to be positive and that this ‘white’ finish is just an undercoat for the real yellow final coat…………please say YES Les? 😮
Yes to what Albert?
As I said above, my hope is it’ll be finished off with dayglo stripes! However, in the probable absence of suitable acres of self-adhesive dayglo paper it’ll no doubt be painted yellow . . . .again.
(They’re waiting until the fin tip is fabricated and fitted and a couple of other small areas are rectified before finalising in the original scheme. But you’ve got to admit it looks the dog’s whatsits in white!)
.
I have not yet passed comment on the colour scheme, only asked questions, or is that not allowed when you are trying to learn about aviation history?
Don’t take umbrage so quickly John. Rob’s fishing like mad here but nobody’s taken the bait yet! 😉
To answer part of your question – the thing was bare metal for its initial test flights I believe and was painted overall yellow when it moved onto “real” research flying. It never flew in a white scheme. (But now, dozens of anoraks will say it did ‘cos they’ve seen a picture of it painted white, innit! Gods bless ’em)
As for flying supersonic, don’t know. But it had a Nene jet engine! 😉
.
Dont you think the roundals would look nicer in the pastel shades with pale blue cheatline and serial ala white anti flash Vulcans?
Nah. Would look more gooder in 60’s overall grey/green camo with the markings of 659 Sqn! Maybe a couple of Firestreaks and a ventral tank. . .
:diablo:
Down at MAM today so I can add to Rob’s pix (he’s only got a phonecam so cut him some slack)
Anyway – I think it looks really smart in o/all white. Don’t know if it’s true but I reckon they’re gonna finish it off with dayglo stripes ( :diablo: ).
Seems there wasn’t/isn’t much corrosion or other ‘damage’ at all on the airframe, minimal really. Quite surprising as it’s stood outside all these years. Mind you,it does have a stainless steel skin. Rivet and screw heads are the biggest problem as has been suggested in another post in the MAM Vulcan thread.
Note two things – nosewheel door now fitted after a number of years lying in the ‘shed’. And no pointed tip to the fin. A new fin tip is being fabricated as the old one was, well, was finished. New central probe being fabricated as well (ref pix would be good).
Meanwhile, the A Team were finishing a task on the F-104. Nearly finished now it looks mean and sleek in its shiny new paint job.
Can’t seem to get excited by this airframe. Interesting yes, the only kite I know that has ground safety guards for the leading edges of the wings! They sound great in flight though, a peculiar buzzing/rasping noise – bit like an A-10 with attitude. And fast . . . takes all of Belgium to turn though. Bit of a liability in a dog-fight I reckon. But then, it was designed as a flash ‘n’ slash hi-alt interceptor.
