A few people I knew always referred to the Argosy as the Whistling Wheelbarrow.
    &
The Shackleton was more or less correctly described as 10,000 rivets flying in loose formation….

Argosy was always known as the Whistling Tit.

The Shackleton was commonly called the Shacklepin, all other pithy sayings were usually used as descriptions for banter not nicknames.

Vulcan was the Tin Triangle; Buccaneer was the Bannana; Nimrod was Mighty Hunter; Comet was the Vomit; Brittania was, in one part of the world, called the Sticky Brit; Belfast was Bellslow; Hercules has only recently been known as Fat Albert, years ago it was just a Herc or a Teddy Bear (gawd knows why.) VC-10 is termed Vickers Funbus, but as with the case of the Shack’s nickname, it was more commonly called a Vicky.

The above from memory, I know I have one – got it backed-up somewhere.

That new construction must, I guess, symbolise something. From above it is reminiscent of a propeller, or a bent wing, or a discarded bit of candy wrapping paper. To me it is a most ill-concieved and inappropriate stucture totally out of keeping with the atmosphere of an RAF airfield. I’ve no doubt it will house all the airframes they plan to put in it, but they’ll look like plastic kits in a garden shed – no “ambience” at all.

any idea when she will be complete?

The work continues and will be completed as and when the volunteers there can make the time from their own lives. You could always go along and help if you want, any of you could. I’m sure the effort would be appreciated.

Think deep down the linies were sad to see the T4 go.

Yeah, know what you mean JASE.

But look on the bright side, no more busting a gut swinging the 2nd seat back with one hand while trying to push the column forward and get the pig-sticker in with the other. Mind you, it was easier I reckon if it was a nav change, then you could do one thing at a time. But it always felt awkward swinging the seat forward with the left hand. And the always anxious moment for riggers when you were undoing the last toggle fastener to swing the nose open, never really trusted that fragile looking hinge.

Still, as you say, sad to see it go. The whole thing will become fond memories in a few years time, you wait and see. 😀

    Hi JASE

Those hangars are pretty much the same as when all us ex-RAF blokes worked in them. What you say was true in the “good old days” as well as now. You’ve got cleaner floors and better lighting now though.

Do you still “TwoSix” on the doors with a winding handle?

    No way buddy…it’s ours!!!

Well do something with it then instead of letting it moulder away still in a dsimantled state in the back of an overcrowded hangar.

Ah, close enough, all look the same to me!

What a confession to make on an Historic Aviation Forum! 😮

Yeah John, but it was fun 😀 . . . as long as you didn’t run out of black tape.

Spent a fair bit of time on an island in the sun – happy daze! 😀

I’ve had this pic for years it seems, it exemplifies the current topic of this thread.

Any shots of the beacons in operation?

Had some difficulty getting pix of the anti-colls, this one seems to be best. Have to get more practice in this sort of photography.

Yup, fully repainted, that’s why it’ll weather a few more winters. Desperately need a canopy cover though – anyone out there know where we can get one?

Agree about WWII aircraft, but they should be capable of being wheeled outside for the day during the “season”. Let the air blow the cobwebs away.

    Thanks Mike

Let’s hope it gets a roof over its head some day.

That’ll never happen. But Malc’s got 922 to a state now where it will last a good few more winters. Constant TLC that’s the secret.

Anyway, personally I like seeing kites outdoors. I know all the arguments, but there’s just something “right” about a aircraft sitting under the sky rather than cramped into a corner of some Ikea-like hall somewhere.

To keep this pot boiling . . .

Another B(I)8, 16Sqn this time, at Bodo I think.

And imagine seeing this when you’re having a quiet day at the beach.

Right. So it’s not an indication of the range of stops then it’s the max apertures at the indicated focal lengths. In that case yes, manky seems to fit here.
