    One anorak to another . . .

“Big mistake there, that model didn’t have a mid-upper turret. Sheesh, you’d think they’d get it right!”

Not a problem squire, took it as banter. 😉

Anyway, Albert can’t complain as it was his pic that was used as “source material”. We (Malc and me) did exhaustive tests for colour balance, taking into account apparent colour tempertaure, hue, saturation, brightness, PanTone number, original film-base stock, date of image and the colour of Albert’s socks the day he took the slide. Then we just eyeballed the pic and Malc painted it orange. 😀 😀

That’s impressive. But is it the right shade of orange? 😀

    Anorak! :diablo:

But it’s intended to “weather in”. 😉

I sent Malc a copy of Albert’s photo of 922 landing at Boscombe (see above) as it’s the only one either of us has seen of 922 in the same colours as she is now at MAM. And today, this happened . . .

Compare with my pic at the head of the thread.

How many other air museums could react that fast? 😀

An excllent rebuild, how often do they power it up ?

Not a “they” but a “he”. Gets powered up whenever Malc is there – Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. Powering it up keeps the equipment/systems condensation problems at bay. Also, well . . . it’s very satisfying.

Just came across this thread and pleased to see a couple of Indian B(I)58s mentioned (and images). Also to read Jagan’s posts because, some time back (1997?), he graciously provided images of B(I)58 No IF907 at the IAF Museum for use on my web site.

One query, maybe Jagan can help find an answer.

The new paint job on IF907 looks good but where has the window over the navigator’s table gone? (See the enlargements attached) Has it been painted over? If so, why?

The Valiant was always intended to be a stop-gap airframe. Built quickly with minimum technological advantages, it was designed and built to provide a fall-back in the event that the Vulcan and Victor programmes suffered serious delay. In the event, both the Vulcan and Victor came up to scratch in time and the RAF had the machines it wanted/needed, hence development of the Valiant tailed off. The wing spar cracks finally killed it even though the type had only been latterly used for PR and IFR duties and not in the aerodynamically stressful bombing role – in which the Vulcan and to some extent the Victor excelled.

Essentially, the Valiant, although a fairly decent kite, did not have the development potential the other two had (or were considered to have). But it was chosen to drop the UK’s first nuke.

The above from memory only at this time of night, but reading a few books on the V-Force will flesh it out. Can recommend V-Bombers by Barry Jones.

By the way, what is the Avro 730? 😉 The Vulcan was the Avro 698.

F105s were never based in Europe!

Must have been dreaming then when they used to visit us at Gielenkirchen from their base at Spangdalem in 62/63.

Here’s a shot of G-ALGT and XH563 in formation over Finningley in the 60s. Don’t know the occasion or exact date but it’s an interesting photo.

Charlie Tango’s (WJ680) first public display when owned by Ron Mitchell was at Duxford in 1994. I took this pic of it back then at Duxford.

    Hope this helps.

May one suggest a Forum meet in the future (perhaps on a day that Malcolm is there) to view this and the Sea Harrier and of course drink loads of tea and slag off forum members.

I’d go if I may. Never been to a Forum Meet. Is special clothing required?

Malc’s always there during the week on a couple of days and on a Sunday. I’m sure he’d be glad to show you lot around the Canberra and SHAR. Be aware though, there are NO Mustangs or Spitfires (except models) but there is an exceedingly well stocked shop and a great little cafe – with very tasty cheese toasties. 😉

Thanks TMN, it is a good place to visit.

When they repaint the exterior . . .

They? He you mean, only one bloke doing the work on the Canberra – but I go down and badger him every couple or three weeks. 😀 He’s an ex-RAF Electrical Chief, and was looking for a “project” in his retirement. Has amazing motivation. Read about his refurbishment project here.

I find it quite sad that more of the Avro Ashton didn’t survive 🙁

I find it surprising that any of it survived.
