    Neil

I have seen a picture of this model and it appears to have black and white stripes.

This is not a problem as there were a few Suez Canberras with B&W stipes – seems one squadron ran out of yellow paint! And that’s not a wind-up either.

    Hah! If they won’t do a B(I)8 they sure won’t do a T.22!

They’re only doing the classic B.2 shape – which includes the USAF B-57A – although they will do a solid nose example to represent the T.4.

Still a good thing though. 😀

So I believe Mark, a FRADU example too! 😀

Papa Lima has it right (as befits a Tech Author of course  ). The DPI has no bearing on images reproduced on screen, just as Damien is always telling us. However, the encoding used has. Most software saves jpg images using Standard Encoding set at around a Compression Level value of 5. To produce images that are less sizeable (in terms of kilobytes) select Progressive Encoding and set the Compression Level value to, say, 15.

You’ll find that even large images – around 3,000kb – can be reduced to around 100kb without loss of image quality on-screen. Experimenting with the save options for jpg images can produce good forum-friendly results.

By the way, the above gen relates to PaintShop Pro but I’m sure other packages will allow such adjustments. 🙂

As I understand it some of the “good” pilots also rotated for a while onto air-test flying with manufacturers. I know that Alan Smith (486 (NZ) Sqn – Typhoons) did a stint with Hawkers. And didn’t “Bee” Beamont do similar – or was that later?

    A couple of points if I may . . .

Sqn is now generally accepted as the shortened version of “squadron”. (It does not take a period after it as the last letter of the whole word is given.)

In my time in the RAF, on various sqns I came across both sqn and sqd usage – it generally depended on the clerk who was compiling at the time I guess – nobody made a big fuss over it. I wouldn’t worry overmuch about usage as long as you are consistent throughout your manuscript.

Also, the RAF was called the raff, and still is. Nobody uses ARR EH EFF in everday conversation, at least nobody that’s ex-raff does; in fact the most common name is “the mob”. (Was the same when my old man was “in” as well).

For Papa Lima – I are a technical author too! You’ll know the adage – 50% of being a tech author is knowing what one is. 40% of the balance is being able to explain to others what a tech author is. 9% is the effort made in preventing others actually discovering what one is. And the remaining 1%? Learning to make a decent cup of coffee!

I guess Dimbleby remembers the good old days when Canberras were fighter bombers.

Dave, Canberras were never fighter bombers – only bomber or PR. Exception was the B(I)8 to which a 4-canon gunpack could be fitted (in the rear of the bomb bay) but this made it an interdictor (ground attack) not a fighter. Canberras did of course slot into many different roles but never as a “fighter”. 😉

    MikeH, are those pictures yours?

Well, on 12 April in the “Steve Hatton’s Avatar” thread MikeH wrote . . .

Nice avatar there Chris, looks a bit familiar though

That’s a great shot of the lo Spit Mike, probably the best I’ve seen. And pre-digital I suspect. 😉

Taken at Kemble a couple of years back, never been that lucky with a shot again. 😉

    Hi Snapper

Taking liberties here, not trying to teach egg sucking or anything, but is this any better? Used some gamma correct and a “soften” tool to ease the “brown” skin tone resulting from a contrasty original. Messed about with other attributes as well though  – like slightly darkening the uniform, lightening the cap badge, stuff like that.

Mind you, with the variation in PC monitor settings etc, I may be seeing a different pic to you. Still, hope you don’t mind. 😀

How does one go about ensuring the correct colours, and textures?

If this was addressed to me, well. . .

“Textures” are built into the original photo.

“Colours” are in my mind’s eye – having been there and done that! 😀

I use PaintShop Pro 7, can the same results be achieved with that?

Pretty much. This was done in PaintShop Pro a year or so back. Not a very good original of course and was done in a hurry, but the bloke was well chuffed with the result.

Thanks for the info. Yes, I too have a cheap HK “Nathan Street” special for my Nikon digital. Worked well for a while then, after about five or six charges, it started losing charge at quite an alarming rate, especially if the flash was used, or the self-timer. It’s about a year or so old now and good for maybe 15-20 (at hi-res) shots. Use it only as emergency back-up now and bought a Jessop’s look-alike.

Ah, but back in the “old” days everything was 1/125 at f5.6 (f8 if it was sunny) and we never bothered with batteries.
