Sounds interesting – is that something you can post here Jon?
That particular plan is about A3 size so will be too big for the scanner, but pretty sure there is a smaller copy in one of the books on the shelf. Will have a root tonight and see what I can turn up 🙂

Thanks Jon, I saw it was in Somerset on the demobbed website. Does anyone have any contact details for the owner? Current status, etc?
Thanks
I could be wrong but I think the owner is a forum member and regular poster here.

Take away the cost of the land from £137 million, Then build 550 houses, how much does a £250,000 house actually cost to build ? You won’t have 137 million after that little lot is paid for . I still reckon the scaffolding alone would consume the best part of ‘several millions’ It would be a major project to assemble scaffolding on that scale, there would be truck loads of scaffolding parts and it would take weeks to erect it and then hire it for a year or so. Or have I got it wrong ??? Whatever the profit margins for the builders I still say that those who had the buildings listed should at least contribute to the restoration. I have seen the outcome of someones little ‘lets make that a listed building’ plan first hand, it is these people that should be the ones paying.
Steve
I deleted the post to which you refer as I realised very quickly it lacked detail and clarity, which you have picked up on. However, all I was trying to say was that there must be a profit still to be made and someone will no doubt do it.
Out of interest and one for the locals – how was the other hangar refurbished and how long did it take?
Jon
The original plan from the developers, back in 2006 ,was to build a housing estate on the adjecent land and use some of the proceeds to fund a £6 million restoration programme.
I guess that now that the recession has struck that they are trying to dispose of the literally, leaky, asset.
According to the article thats still the plan –
“Planning permission has been secured for 550 houses to be built on the land, with the condition the 157ft (48m) tall and 812ft (247m) long hangar would be refurbished.”

So you just need to ask the owner!
Jon
Wonder if that 104 would be of interest to the chap at Brunty? Wasn’t he in need of a better rear fuselage?
Suspect already on the case given post #129
Jon
Looks like the front end of a Boeing 707.
Thought maybe G-APFG but just found a picture and it aint that one! So that leaves G-APFJ but last time I saw that it was at East Fortune in BA colours. Unless it has been away for a repaint and is on its way back home…??
Jon
Nice find!
As someone once said to me “never give up – you never know what is out there.”
Jon
Thanks for the photo of your progress on the model, and the recommendation for other books.
Wouldn’t that be fantastic to find in an archives somewhere a general arrangement drawing for a catapult. The suggestion to look in the Imperial War Museum online archives sounds interesting.
Wonder if there is any information for the one that was at Speke anywhere?
I have a 1946 plan of the site showing where the catapult was located at home somewhere.
Jon
shrinkage allowance off the original casting when used as a pattern can vary depending on the thickness etc of the structure [anything from 3-6%]…..but if you have the skill and foundry practice and are using “old” ways of producing the mold boxes then that can be fiddled ….allowing very close dimensional reproduction of the new casting
Thanks for that 🙂
Jon
You make the mold slightly bigger. Can’t remember by how much though. It has been thirty two years since I cast anything!
Rgds Cking
Indeed you do!
However the implication, to me anyway, is that the old original one was used as the pattern so either the new casting is slightly smaller or some other technique has been used to help compensate.
Jon
Out of interest, how have you compensated for the metal shrinkage in the newly casted part?
Jon
Well if they are then not listed as surviving anywhere, however more than happy to be proved wrong!
Jon
So what has been banished from the hangar to make space for the Vimy?
Jon
Went past Lasham today and see the guys trying to get the wing hinge pins off the Sea Hawk.
Wonder where WV798 is off to then?
