Still, what’s the use stocking up on parts you will never use.
Cheers

Because one day you never know?! 😉
How many of us have boxes of plane bits and refuse to part with them just in case…..

If any of you lot are lurking in W H Smiths, there’s a new publication about Fred Dibnah complete with free DVD.
What I didn’t realise was that he brought down the control tower at Burtonwood in 1988 and there is a small article in there about this including some sad but awsome pictures of the tower coming down, I bet there’s some news footage of this somewhere.
If you’re Dibnah fans, and I gather he didn’t like flying much, the whole thing is a sad reflection on how the great man’s heritage is being destroyed by legal wrangles, it had me in tears.
Ah very fond memories of Burtonwood. Used to love going to Manchester with Mum so I could see all the buildings! Shame really as nothing has been built on the site since…….. 🙁 Also for some reason I have a feeling the few remaining hangars are not going to be around much longer either….?
Jon
Is this the article? Found it reproduced on the aeroclocks website – fascinating reading.

Dean.
A place I dearly wish I could visit! 😀

There moust have been more than one model, as the one in Flypast was pictured in recent times at an auction, it was huge, but not full size. I wonder who bought it?
That model is with TVOC at Brunty painted up as 558.
As for the underwater stuff they built a full size mock up (maybe just the front end??) in the Bahamas on the sea bed. Tube frame covered in canvas if memory serves me correctly. I fact I believe the framework is still there and a popular diving spot.

You can make a start on my Chevy next Jon! :diablo:
Hey if you need a hand I have offered in the past! 😛
Also what about the small matter of your newborn daughter…..?! 😉 Cant see your missus being too impressed with that thing roaring into life again.
Jon
Very impressive stuff!
Not being at all familiar with the K-88 what is its background?
Cheers 🙂
Jon
You mean he didn’t hit the dataplate!
In fact I will wager it will probably be at legends next year! 😉 😀
A spare hour, various paint stripping methods, a tin of etch and some elbow grease yielded this!
Yes it not very impressive on the grand scale of things but this is the first piece of MLZ to be restored. Compare with the before picture in the opening post. 😀
Jon
Ok maybe a slight curve ball here but how about a half and half job? The worst side sympathetically restored and the other left as is.
Just more fuel for the debate anyway 😉

Does anyone know whay type of servo altimeters were fitted to Brits during their working life? Or failing that ones commonly fitted during that era?
I have checked a parts catalogue but it pre dates this requirement! I would put the listed instrument back in but the pilots panel has been cut to accommodate one so figured might as well put one in for added interest rather than patch it.
Cheers,
Jon
Thoughts and opinions please 🙂
Evening folks,
Now here is an interesting question I would like to throw out there for debate.
My original intention was to rebuild the wee beasty. However having spoken to a few people and received a PM or two, I now wonder if this is the right way to go? Would it in fact be a better idea to leave her as she is and maybe construct a replica to display alongside? So that nothing original is consigned to the bin (not as if there is much of it left as it is) and people can see what it would have looked like?
Over to you…. 🙂
Jon
You wish! :diablo:
Winter will certainly prevent us from applying any more paint for a while but work will continue on the rivetting and bolting in preparation for attaching the rear fuse section in late spring. Work will also shift focus onto the interor now that we’ve a plan of action and thanks to our spanky new generator we can even remain relatively warm while we work.
Have we set a date for first flight yet? 😀
Roy.
Ah so the plan has changed now! 😉
So I best bring my thermals on Sunday then. 😀

I know there are a few locations that could take G-AZMF tomorrow but its whether the money would be in place to move it…Once funding is in place, dismantle, movement and rebuild is academic…………..Look what was done with G-AWZK,We did it.:D
Oops!
Sorry I meant funding – original post amended.
As for G-AWZK got nothing but admiration for what you guys achieved! My only gripe is that you didnt bring her to Speke 😉
Jon
I think the bigger issue is funding.
I know there are a few locations that could take G-AZMF tomorrow but its whether the money would be in place to move it…..
That said hope it all comes together and if she does end up in the North West will happily lend my help and support. I mean it cant be any harder to put back together than a Britannia can it!? :diablo:
Jon
Jon,
What are your intentions with this ? Are you know the owner for example ?
.
I squared the ownership issue when it was first thought it had gone with the Prince. Caernarfon were quiet happy to see the back of it and had no issues with me having it.
As for my intentions – as daft as it sounds I now feel responsible to look after the poor thing and am going to tackle restoring it with a view to it going back on display in its country of birth somewhere (fellow forumite has suggested a good location already). This was not what I planned orginally but as a lot of you know these things just draw you in somehow! I seem to attract airframes in need of saving lol 😀
I could have sold her on etc but having thought long and hard I dont want to profit from something I got in good faith for free. Our aviation heritage is the bigger picture for me and if I can do my little bit to help preserve a part of that then my time and effort is justified.
Though it does help that Millom have 2 Fleas for reference oh and plans! 🙂
