Looks like the pic was taken at the Enemy Aircraft Exhibition at Farnborough – the aircraft in the background fit.
Nice selection, thanks. Good to see the Turbo-Mentor there and still in original paints
AFAIK they are still in service (and turn up at photodays from time to time).
Original plan was to replace them with a Canberra, but they all went from service without any change/
I beleive the Fw can fly as it is certified/registered in an EU country, and the standards are supposed to be harmonised across the EU.
As for HAA’s Buccaneer, it’s more likely to fly under an MOD serial as a civil-operated military aircraft if it gets any contract work (like their Hunter F58s), neatly side-stepping the CAA – but I think the conditions of that don’t include airshow work.
I beleive there are tax reasons why it has to be a parking charge rather than an entry charge
I only worked on the 2’s for a couple of years at Lyneham as they were phasing them out of service (can’t remember why though ) I know there was talk of polished metal thinness due to the RAF polishing the aluminium bodies up too often but that could be a load of bull….t but having said that the remaining 4c’s in RAF service were resprayed on the shiny bits to avoid corrosion and thankfully….. polishing.
Was certainly a problem on the Queens Flight Herons at one point, so it could be on the Comets.
Weere the wings on the 2s bare metal ? It always looked less ‘shiny’ than the fuselage, and I wondered if they were painted Aluminium/High Speed Silver.
Shots of the T/C2s on delivery look like the fuselage could have been painted as well.
By the way i wonder whats left of the Dalcross Defiant… was / is there a substantially complete airframe still underwater.?
There was talk (By the then Curator of East Fortune) that one of the ‘monster’ scans of Loch Ness showed what appeared to be a substantially complete Defiant at the bottom of the Loch.
Well it was at Coningsby in the early 1990’s and isn’t now so it’e either been ‘recycled’-‘scrapped’ or ‘lost’ and I know from experience that is pretty difficult with Mod property!
Are you fishing David? What happened to TB382 is (reasonably) well known (and much still survives), however regrettable. My own view is it would have been a better historical choice for Kelvingrove than LA198.
These days they are just SF hercs, there are no dedicated EC hercs.
I’m thinking back to the 70s/80s time period
I suspect it might be a Greek mk V -Is it just me or does it look like it has the later style elevators?
British repatriation policy used to always be ‘bury them where they fell’ – take the Falklands for example.
It’s only in recent years we have started to routinely repatriate our military dead.
Also, don’t forget the K is still in service, and likely to be for a few more years yet (If they don’t fall apart before then)
“RAF C-130 with electronic intelligence equipment flew from the Pacific via Easter Island disgused as Chilean Air Force aircraft. This was done on the premise they had to fly between internal destinations within Chile collecting intelligence. The aircraft were noted by the misspelling of the Fuerza Area de Chile.”
The RAF’s EC-130 equivalents are probably the rarest Hercs – i beleive you could identify them by additional external antennae wires.
There were a few T7s with the F8 tail (Unofficially called T7 1/2)
Both Martin-Baker’s aircraft have them – beleive the Prisoner aircraft is one of them (Shot at Chalgrove) – note that inspite of having the ‘framed’ canopy, both cockpits appear to have ejection seats fitted – I beleive MB used ain interchangeable canopy
as I have bored you before, I have a canopy:)
Seafang or Spiteful?
