RE: Uninteresting!!!
I agree with Adonis. I have found that I now only bother to open the forum about once a week and generally have nothing to contribute because the topics are of no interest to me.
I’ve tried to start a few topics off, some serious, some light hearted, but they seem to fizzle out after only a few days. The funny thing is, many of the posts which last for many days or weeks are on the most trite subjects, like “What’s the fastest you’ve been” or “Hello”.
I must be missing something….

RE: Lancaster G George
I suppose it wouldn’t hurt to actually answer the original question – How is G/George progressing?
The last I heard, George was back on partial display, with the cockpit and forward fuselage available for viewing, whilst the remainder of the aircraft is receiving on-going overhaul behind drapes.
I haven’t actually seen her, members can rest assured that this aircraft, of considerable historical significance to Australia’s war effort, is in the best of hands and will eventually emerge looking as good as possible.

RE: how fast have you personally been
Ahhh, the memories of youth…
I can’t match the speeds you blokes speak of, but the circumstances were pretty memorable anyway. (and I think the statute of limitations on traffic offences would be pretty good after 25 years, but I digress…
In 1978, I owned a Holden (Australian GM product), fitted with a Chevrolet 327 engine and four speed manual.
One night, about 3 am, when all the Highway Patrol boys had gone to bed, I was driving home somewhat rapidly from southern Sydney to my home on the northern beaches. I was travelling towards the point where Kingsford Smith airport crosses the roadway, forming a tunnel about 200 metres long. A hotted up Ford Falcon utility came alongside and it was on. Both of us floored it through the tunnel. I only reached about 120 mph on the speedo, probably about 115 actual, and was absolutely flat out. So was the Falcon. The echo from our exhaust systems in that tunnel was music to the ears of a petrol head.
Like I said, the memories of youth. Seems bloody stupid today, seeing as it was in the middle of a city, not in the country somewhere.

Lancman
The owners of Just Jane had better be careful. If she spends too much time running around with her tail in the air, some nasty type from the Museum will try to stick a budgie perch under it!!!;)

RE: Wrong forum
Neilly
I think you’re right about the merits of both mags. I buy them each month regardless of content and always enjoy the read.
I agree with you about the excessive comment regarding Lancs and Spits, perhaps Mustangs could be included. I particularly enjoy the historical articles regarding squadron operations, histories and personal stories, but have little interest in air-show reports, and I do think that Flypast overdoes those. Others may well disagree – perhaps it’s because I reside so far from the few air-show venues in Australia and have never actually been to one.
I haven’t really thought about the excessive coverage of American aviation – perhaps that’s included in the air-shows.
Whatever, I will continue to purchase both mags, but would like to see a return to the archeological reporting, as neither magazine covers that in great detail.
The other area I would like to see is quarterly reports on progress on major projects, such as the FW-189. I know they have a web-site, but I think there is room for this kind of article in the mags.

RE: My Bad Day
I had a bad start to a day about twenty years ago, but it’s worth repeating.
I was travelling on the ferry from Manly to Circular Quay (Sydney Australia.) During heavy weather, the part of that journey which crosses between the heads of Sydney Harbour can be very rough, with large seas rolling in from the south.
As the ferry crosses this part of its journey, it will bury its bow heavily in the waves and then rise out before plunging into the next trough. It can be very exciting and some passengers can go quite green.
On this particular trip, I decided to sit outside, to watch the ocean rolling in towards the ferry. I was dressed for my office job, including a warm heavy coat as it was mid-winter (yes, it does get pretty cold down here sometimes!)
The ferry nosed into one wave, which then washed back over me and the other passengers next to me. We were completely soaked through. I sat there, drenched and freezing, thinking “What the hell do I do now?” Did I continue to work, hoping to dry out or catch the return ferry home.
By the time the trip was completed, I had started to dry out, so I proceeded to work.
I can say, though, that I felt like a total idiot sitting there, sopping wet, looking like a drowned rat in front of all those other (dry) passengers inside the ferry. It’s true what they say, though, that you laugh at these things years later, I certainly do.

RE: New Year
Guys
New Zealand is two hours ahead of Australia, assuming they share eastern daylight saving time with us. They share the same time zone as many Pacific Islands, so they will be the first to greet the new year. There are some small Pacific Island groups which are actually further east than NZ, so they get to greet the dawn first. You might remember the fuss made over the dawning of the new century in 2000, where groups of people flocked to those islands to be amongst the first to greet the new millenium (even though it really was still a year away.
Gary,
During our summer, we are actually GMT +11, I think, due to daylight saving time. Normally, we are GMT +10, and during our winter/the UK summer, GMT +9. ( I think)
To all forum members, from those of us on the wrong side of the world, as Christmas day is but three hours away, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I sincerely hope it is a peaceful, prosperous and successful one for all of you.

RE: On the Box Christmas Special!!
Ant
Thanks for the sympathies, old son.
Actually, Christmas Day is predicted to only be 23 degrees, cloudy, with some rain. Still sink a few cans, but the beach can look after itself, I think.
As for the cricket, all I can say is, England are definitely NOT the worst team going around at present. Sri Lanka deserves that title. They are the third team in the tri-nations one day series out here at present, and England have flogged them both times they have met.
Australia’s openers scored more runs that the whole Sri Lankan team in their first match together last night.
Enjoy your night snuggled up in front of the telly, mate – I’ll still have to put up with the old groaner and the other dud crap they put on this time of the year!
