    RE: Hello

    Hi Snapper,

You weren’t alone in your thoughts – I thought Pigeon man was Hellaid V3.0 or whatever he/she is up to now, but it appears that Hellaid is known personally(one way or t’other) by somebody else in the form.

They are obviously the best of “friends”, so I propose to sit back and watch them slug it out on the forum over coming weeks.

    Regards

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 20-02-03 AT 06:38 AM (GMT)]It would’ve been a mongrel to land on a carrier though. Would have overhung each side of the flight deck. Landings would have been interesting when it reached the island – CRUNCH!!!

    Why???

Because Hellaid keeps sticking his head up for us all to take a free kick!

I don’t hate you either, Hellaid, I just agree with Snapper – I don’t understand you.

Well, I think you’re all being very mean to poor Hellaid/Hellaid 2/Hellaid reincarnated/Hellaid what the hell/Who the hell is Hellaid.

This forum needs a broad spectrum of members, a cross-section if you like, of society in general.

Every society has its intelligentsia, its proletariat, the common masses, and yes, even its dim-witted component. Somebody has to represent each element, and who better represents the latter on this forum?

My sympathies go out to you, old son. It must be difficult trying to even appear intelligent when you enter such stratospheric heights as this forum, with a deflated balloon for a brain. It doesn’t matter how you try to evade the fact – you are sadly out of your league in discussions aeronautical, grammatical, hypothetical, numerological or even good old fashioned logical.

But you are welcome, because as one other member stated so succinctly, “Don’t you just HAVE to open his posts?” You can be controversial, and every forum such as this needs controversy to thrive.

    RE: Earth re-entry problems

Hmm, I understand the point that each of you makes. My point was not to ask whether a vertical descent was superior to the current method – any twit would realise that it isn’t. Garry has gone closest to the problem that currently exists. Slower entry can only come about by some form of braking, as I mentioned, and the only form which is currently effective is by reverse thrust through rockets. But these require huge amounts of fuel, restricting payload etc…

So far, nobody has come up with any alternatives to current technology and I certainly don’t have any answers either. That was the point of my post – looking for ideas on how to address this problem. For example, what sort of speed could the shuttle reduce to and still hold its approach pattern, without “stalling” or losing momentum and entering an excessively vertical descent?

One thing that must be looked at is the current heat shield of ceramic tiles. They could be the major weak link in the whole re-entry process. If no existing metal can survive the levels of friction during re-entry, some other form of heat protection, which is more durable and less susceptible to damage from external contact than the tiles, needs to be devised. If such a durable heat shield could be developed, the re-entry speed might not be an issue.

    RE: Uninteresting!!!

    Domin

My post mentioned your “hello” thread and another, but wasn’t intended to criticise you or any other member of the forum.

My point was that the subject was not likely to engender solid discussion across the forum. “Hello” certainly showed that the forum is a friendly place to be, sure, but it was hardly likely to be the sort of post you would open up to see what other members’ points of views were – you just knew it was going to be a long list of return greetings, and not particularly interesting.

It’s funny, but this thread is becoming interesting. Why? Because it is one where everybody can have an opinion without having intimate knowledge of the subject. It affects us all and some of us have differing views to others. The point was made that we are, perhaps, becoming overly focussed on the impending actions in the Middle East. When and if that occurs, then yes, we’ll have plenty to discuss, but with the never-ending news reports on terrorism generally, I’m even becoming very bored with that subject.

Another point was made that members have placed topics on the forum which they thought were winners, only to see them hijacked or shot down in two or three replies. I can only agree. I have tried a number of subjects which I thought would have some value in them, only to see them head off in an opposite direction after one or two members digressed in their posts. Now, before I put a post on, I think it through to see if it really will be of interest to many others, rather than just a few.

At least the world isn’t concerned about the Greeks.

I agree that the North Korean marching style is just too close to that of Nazi Germany for comfort. Get a ratbag leadership and march like you’re going to step over everyone.
