Oops!! Could happen to any airline! Ryanair, BMI, Emirates or Wizz Air. Of course not all of those airlines choose to use an airport many miles away from Glasgow in another county!! Thankfully no one was injured, it must be hard for a fully laden 737 to stop from 140 mph on an icy runway! Though I would suppose O’Leary would blame the snow ploughs!!

All good things must come to an end, enjoy your last couple of days in the Greek sun! It is apparently 0 degrees outside in Edinburgh atm, last night my dad said his car was reading -7!

Oh lucky you, it was around 24 degrees in Tenerife whilst I was over. Much prefer those kinds of temperatures to the cold snowy weather that is currently plaguing the UK! It was great seeing the snowy landscape as we landed though!

Wouldn’t have thought there were many BE Dash 8-400s flying around late on Xmas Eve!

I’ll be tracking him on Xmas Eve using the NORAD system! I seem to remember a few years back Santa suffered a mid air collision with an FR 737!

Really festive photos there! A busy day for the de-icers at MAN today then? Hope all those planes get to leave for their destinations, the “g” shark fin in the last photo is going nowhere though 🙁

Thanks again Deano! Always love getting technical info about flights from pilots! Such an interesting and exciting job despite some pilots I have heard not agreeing with that statement!

Hey Deano and indeed all other respondents!

It is great to hear about how slots work from a pilot! Accurate info guaranteed!

I just assumed that if FR6622 is scheduled for a 12:05 departure that’s the slot that it will have unless it misses it due to delay then as I have heard on ATC planes can be stung with lengthy delays. Our captain, who was not the usual 20 year old captain that FR are famous for in my books, told us that our slot was 90 mins later than scheduled, and after the groan from all the passengers, he said that in practise there was no way we were going to wait that long as he had put in said “ready message”. Indeed he then said that the slot had been brought forward to 30 mins late!

Also interesting to be corrected on the flexibility of slots I assumed that your earliest airborne was 10 mins before the slot not 5 mins!

    Regards

    AJ

This is very sad news indeed. Being out of a job this close to Christmas can never be great! FlyGlobespan was used frequently by my family on trips from Edinburgh to Spain and I always found their service to be very good for a lo-co. I am actually it Tenerife at the moment, was going to be flying with them until I found that the great M O´Leary would get me there and back for about a third of the price GSM was quoting me. Very lucky that I chose not to fly with GSM I guess!! I honsetly thought that they were going to like Alitalia, battle through their turbulent times somehow!! My thoughts are with all the lovely people at GSM who have served me on their 737s who are now out of a job and also with those stranded abroad!

Except for their long haul services with 200LR’s from LAX.

Again my bad, Wikipedia said that LAX was not a hub or focus city so I thought the DL 777s would all be tied up between ATL and JFK and perhaps even CVG though airliners.net records seem to suggest DL 777s are not frequent visitors to the latter!

    BA Don’t…

My apologies I read Wikipedia far too quickly there they have 6 300s on order!! My mistake!

Just had a thought! Do V Australia have to operate their aircraft into that particulate gate at LAX? Can they not use another gate that is regularly used by 773s or even A340s if there was a question about how it would fit? they could have even operated the inaugural flight into a bigger gate and then since it was there, they could have towed/taxied her into the other gate! Save what I would guess to be thousands of dollars on an additional flight! What I am surprised at is not that they didn’t measure the space with a tape measure because many things work in theory but not in practice, but that a plane was flown from Australia to LAX (12 hours maybe?) just to fit it into a gate! Must be wrong info! I mean the tape measure answer would not show up any difficulty for a flight deck crew to be able to taxi the plane into the gate if there were airport vehicles servicing other aircraft round about!

Well thanks for your reply! I didn’t realise that neither UA or AA operated the 300 variant of the T7! Neither do DL but they would have no need to come into LAX anyhow! It is strange seeing as BA, Air NZ, Cathay Pacific, Emirates, PIA, Air Canada, Air India and Air France all operate 200s and 300, why are they so unpopular in their home market?

I was going to suggest the tape measure idea before 27vet got there before me. I am sure that the most authoritative website in the world Wikipedia would give you the wingspan of a 777-300ER in metres and feet and inches. In fact it does! Wingspan of 212ft 7in or 64.8m! Might need more than one tape measure then! I can’t believe that the 777-300ER is only 5 feet shorter than my beloved A340-600, nothing is allowed to come close to the A340-600 is length terms!!:eek:;)
