That website I mentioned belongs to Tony Wood. But for some reason it doesn’t seem to be working right now, perhaps if you try again later or maybe he’s moved.
Something has certainly gone wrong with that link – here is the new one it seems …
Any clues as to where the airline represented by the Electra comes from ? š
DRAX Air Freight – Google says Moonraker! As in Bond, James Bond.
Whoops – I see Paul R already answered this – apologies 9/11
Great photos alright – I look forward to visiting one day (sigh – so very far away).
Would someone please tell me about the engine/windscreen/undercarriage thing that appears in a couple of the photos. Looks like a Gladiator to me.
Thanks, D
Hard to say Dave, I would think it unlikely, but there was a lot of kudos in shooting down a Mosquito.
And the argument that a night fighter pilot might find himself attacking a heavily armed fighter (and therefore what? turn away?) is a bit thin for two reasons, both of which the German air defenses were completely up on:
1. The significant majority of Mosquitoes over Germany were either bombers or recon aircraft
2. Every interview or book etc. I’ve read from the night fighter perspective makes it very clear that the air war was no quarter “me or him” thing – attacking bombers was dangerous, flying around at night in a war zone was dangerous, landing was dangerous (o/a intruders).
So I don’t think it’s reasonable to suggest a night fighter would have second thoughts about chasing or firing on a Mosquito, on the contrary they’d love to bag one and put in considerable effort to do so. And that’s because they were a pain, comparatively invulnerable (altitude & speed) and therefore a challenge. I think, with respect, the propanganda is the Contact magazine article – give the lads a boost sort of stuff.
cheers, gnome
YES. Wilfred Owen – his are extraordinary works – they bring the horror of WWI home. Dulce et Decorum …. tremendous, try also “Strange Meeting”
Skypilot
“The Other Battle: Luftwaffe Night Aces Versus Bomber Command” by Peter Hinchliffe. The title is self-explanatory, it is a must in it’s field, arguably the best anaysis of this war long fight, plus it’s a good read and has some great photos.
Put it on the top of your list.
cheers and good luck
No need to shout JB – way up north in the USA is what I said (look at the punctuation). I was somewhere nearby in December of ’98 or maybe 2000. Anway it was hellish cold, snowing and all that. I enjoyed it being from Sth Hemisphere summer. There was so much ice/snow on the airport runway (Omaha, Nebraska, not that far from Fargo, ND) that they had to line planes up to the terminal by alternate fwd/reverse thrust of the engines. Amazing. And I couldn’t help but think of the Coen Brothers film.
Well, you know the saying “when you gotta go, you gotta go …”
Very interesting discussion, many thanks to all concerned for the education!
Over the interests of ALL others if it ignites a bonfire.
Vietnam?

My perspective is that of the outsider – but yes, I have been to New York and lot’s of other places besides (NYC, LA, Florida all over, Little Rock Arkansas, Detroit and other parts of Michigan, way up north near Fargo).
And I’m not arguing Democrat vs Republican, just noting the significant splits in perception between what seems to be urban/urbane USA and the “heartland” .. the selective quote you have taken from the article highlights that beautifully.
All that said, I am one of the rest-of-the-world majority that is concerned at this administration’s approach to the world and terrorism. On the face of it, it appears to be self-serving – in terms of rating US security above the lives and values of others, in terms of the Middle East focus being patently Zionist and oil oriented (as an aside I note the new intention to be pro-producer internally too) and tragically for the world appearing, whether intended or not, to be a matter of faith. The faith being of course some sort of fundamentalist Christianity. This raises the spectre of a “clash of fundamentalisms” as Tariq Ali so eloquently puts it.
These perspectives, shared by so many around the world, many who are asking themselves whether they really understand the USA at all (as Manhattan appears also to be wondering) lead me and many others to the obvious conclusion – the dogma of this administration is increasing risk and terrorism, not the opposite.
āUnless we drain the swamp of injustice in which the mosquitoes of terrorism breed, we’ll never defeat the threat of terrorismā Jim Wallis of the Sojourners, Feb 1 2002
Read this – you’ll have to register – it is worth it, you get access to the NY Times, a fine rag.
You’ll find a split and bewildered America, the Untied States if ever there were. 16% of Manhattan voters voted Bush – now where was the World Trade Centre? Guess they don’t trust Bush the Younger to cure World Terrorism after all.
Oh, and I hear the administration’s going to unleash “a wave of freedom across the Middle East”. Bet the recipients are looking forward to that.
Nothing at all wrong with Kippers – that’s a must I’d say
oops – made
