Mirage or Skyhawk in the Falklands i think:rolleyes:
Had a question like this a bit back, mines the same answer as then, 200ft above the Normandy beaches 6th June 1944 to watch it all unfold.
Europes finest hour. Regards Phil.
Sorry I cannot tell you who the artist is. It is interesting that the view is of the starboard side as most would choose the port that featured Donald Duck. My guess is that the Spitfire is EN951, the last of three that Zumbach flew that featured a Donald. Only BM144 was based at Northolt. In August 1942 303 Squadron moved to Kirton-in Lindsey where BM144 was replaced by EP594. In late September it was replaced with EN951 which came from 133 Squadron where it was flown by another famous ace Don Blakeslee. On 1st December Zumbach’s tour ended and the Spitfire was passed to S/Ldr Bienkowski. In June 1943 it arrived at 315 (Polish) Squadron recoded PK-D but didn’t stay long, being transferred to 19 Squadron on the 20th. As this was the only Spitfire of the three to feature the tiny serial number it must be the one in the painting.
Thanks for the reply
Has anybody got a good thing to say about the new logo for the 2012 Olympics?
Please, please, please say this logo is a hoax.
First impressions matter and mine was “That’s awful”. It just looks a mess and I feel embarrassed that this is the symbol the world will see supposedly representing this country. All that rubbish spouted by Coe and Blair et al sounds like just so much manager bull**** I have to read through every day. What does it MEAN? Unless you know what you’re looking at you cannot see “2012”, and if that’s what it means then why is their a dot in the middle? Please ‘evolve’ it into something meaningful ASAP.
I used to have a lot of respect for Coe and the organising committee etc. but I now feel that if they think this is good then their judgement must be somewhat impaired, and what does that mean for the games as a whole? For those who haven’t, pick a colour…
I would set up a vote but as I don’t know how, you could always sign the petition here http://www.gopetition.co.uk/online/12539.html
Reminds me of the SS Badge.

Anyone born in the U.S. is an American cirtizen…however, if his parents moved somewhere, he could have become a naturalized citizen of that country.
but what if his parents were say british and working in America would he have
duel nationality, just curious.

Eddie, no Dinghy Young wasn’t a Yank but Joe Mcarthy was a Yank serving in the RCAF. Joe had to take the spare Lanc when his went “tech” and proceded to the Eder dam alone, he carried out an attack on the Eder but no breech was observed. Dingy Young didn’t return he was shot down by flak on the run home.
Just done a google on Young it says born in Pasadena California 1916, but that doesn’t necessarily make him an American national.:)
Regards Phil.
Hi.
Just finished reading “Bombs Tallboy, Dambuster, Grand slam” by
Stephen Flower it states that a ventral position had been considered
and fitted to one of the trials aircraft, but was dispensed with before
the dams raid. But it does not say if it was a single or a twin gun.
It also says that in April 1944 ten modified Lancasters were put into
storage by 617 at RAF Metheringham along with a quantity of Upkeeps.
Regards Phil.
An F-105 is a gate guardian at RAF Croughton.
A quick google earth
found this
Sorry for being a retard there 🙁 lol both projects were dismantled in what can only be described as disgusting haste, and due to corruption, espionage or political shortsightedness we will never have the pleasure of seeing these aircraft fly:(
If you want to know why TSR.2 was canceled just read Peter Wright’s
spycatcher it tells you all you need to know about Harold Wilson and the Labour goverment, he was convinced wilson was KGB along with the head of
MI5 Roger Hollis, with those to running things it’s no wonder it was scraped.
Plus a lot of help from that lord bloody Montbatten RN.
I know there wasn’t many of them produced but since we are talking about WW2 bombers, what sort of load could a B-32 carry?
20.000lb
In 1946/47 as part of Project Ruby, USAAF B-17s and B-29s operated from Marham, dropping a series of bombs onto the U-boat pens at Farge. the B-17s carried Disney rocket-powered bombs on external bomb racks mounted under the wing root area.
The B-29s were used to carry Tallboy, Grand Slam and Amazon bombs (the Amazon a US equivalent of the Grand Slam in terms of weight, I believe). To load these biggies, the 29’s bomb doors were removed and special releases were fitted. To get the bombs into the aircraft a hole was dug in the ground, the bomb put in the hole and then the aircraft was towed over the top of the bomb which was then winched up to be carried semi-submerged in the belly of the aircraft.
The Grand Slam was designed to be dropped from an altitude that the Lancaster could not get to. Only the B-29 could get it to its optimum release height (35,000 + ft?). There were some pics of the Marham-based B-29s published in Flight at the time.
I know it’s an old post but just found this pic of the Aircraft involved.

Phil.
From the two Pick-up truck tailgates leaning on it, at 48″ wide, or tall as they stand, and we are seeing less than half of them, I would guess the beast to be about 30-32″ in diameter.
That’s a wheel trim at the side of the Bomb, so i would say the length to be about 6 ft.
Phil.
Did it get any bids or was the reserve a bit high?
No it’s still there, started it at £160 will be auctioned again on the 15th April
