Great Escape Documentary..a worthy post !

Thanks to that individual who relinked by question yesterday on the new dvd documentary on The Great Escape. Noted the wonderful information & information given here . Much has been written & researched about this March 1944 event…one of my favorite works on the subject is the book ” The Longest Tunnel ” by Alan Burgess. Yes..the 1963 film was for me an introduction into this chapter in WW II history and in later years I came to learn what really happened with this historical event. The events of that day has many of us here…myself included having much respect & admiration for the character of these men who risked all to continue to fight against their enemy ! To me it mattered not that the real escapers were not GI’s or “YANKS” but men in a difficult situation doing all they could to carry the war against Nazi Germany. Each March 24th…this Yank offers his own personal prayer & salute to those men from many nations responsible for the freedom’s I enjoy today…..& the 50 murdered by the Nazi’s ! Looking forward to getting my dvd & seeing what this production holds !

    Remember The 50 !!!!!!!!!!

    Thanks Ozzie for this information

    Ozzie:

Great information about these books & the authors…. as a long time member of The Mighty Eight Historical Society here in the US..I will pass this along to those of us with a keen love of The Mighty & Ninth Air Forces. Looks like some intensive & amazing research on the men & their air craft. I salute these men for keeping & saluting this generation of warriors alive. Much like Roger Freeman & other air war historians ….their memories live on in theses books and our collective memories ! Their Maximum Efforts live on !!!!!!!

A Salute from BlueNoser352 for this effort !

Would love to see this segment on DVD

    BlueNoser352 here:

I know from talking to many Eighth AF vets over the years as the Yanks pulled out of many of their bases…many items that could not carried back or given or sold to locals was dumped in pits on the local air base…so its logical if some sort of past historical records..maps..interviews with veterans of these 8th 9th airbases…..perhaps if the land is still undeveloped….you might strike pay dirt. Of course legal matters need to be settled before any project is under taken. Having been to Bodney…home of the famed 352nd……no telling what is beneath that soil…but I believe its under control of the MOD.

Maybe some one could record this segment & put it up on Youtube for all to see ! Love those Time Team sorts of programs..where one digs at historical sites..battlefields etc. The Spitfire dig in France was one of my favorite shows ……great program ! We get some of these programs perhaps 6 months to a year later on our version of The History Channel, Discovery.etc !!!! Remember the hunt for Wing Commander Douglas Baders Spitfire that crashed in France….excellent program. Hope someone will report here on the program and what they found….Maybe a fine member can record this segment & put it up on Youtube……………. a kind request from the colonies!

Hope its warming up over there !!!!!!

Was there a large Luftwaffe presence ?

The Occupation of The Channel Islands is a neat topic for students & historians of the Second World War. The subject has been well written about and several television series were produced about this period of WW II. I have often wondered about the size of the Luftwaffe on the Islands during the war .
Was there a sizable fighter or recon squardon force based there during the war?
Seems the Ailled forces left the German forces there alone and surrounded as the war moved on !

    thanks !

    Troy:

Thanks so much for the reply and the information. Have enjoyed your work with the 352nd FG………….. I have passed this link to other members of Maj Preddys family and 352nd family. Nice to see you on this outstanding forum….. This was new information to me with regard to Preddy’s last encounter on Dec 25th with the Luftwaffe. I have always thought a great subject to paint with regard to Maj Preddy was his return on Aug 6th to Bodney surrounded by member of the 352nd ..after his 6 victory mission.
What wonderful photos those are of the event showing a tired Major accepting congrats & well wishes from the men. Thanks again for your outstanding aviation art work ……. I know its well respected by so many in the 352nd family ! Long live the memory of The Preddy brothers and the 352nd FG !!!!! SECOND TO NONE ” !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for posting this Creaking Door !

BlueNoser352 saying thanks Creaking Door for posting this great video story, as someone who reads & collects all that he can on this escape on a cold night of March 24th 1944…this is a nice find. Another tribute to those who were in this effort to always continue their personal fight against the Nazis even though they were in a POW camp. Thanks again…..& his daughter for sharing this with us all who admire & respect what these men did.
