Forum members:
Thanks so much for taking the time to offer me this information..this was just what I was looking for. I saw the clips on Youtube and would love to add this to my dvd dambuster collection …… in some small way I feel each time we read and discuss this topic of 617’s dangerous mission ..its a tribute to these young men who risked all on this mission. Like the story of The Great Escape … The story of The Dam Busters tells the story of brave men who risked all in their personal & collective war against the evil dreams of Aldolf Hilter and his band of thugs ! BlueNoser352 offers a note of thanks here for the information ! I note the dvd documentary on The Great Escape – The Reckoning is released on the 27th of this month. Looking forward to see it ……….. !

Dave thanks for sharing this with us !
Dave:
Sorry to hear of his passing and thanks for sharing the story with us here on the forum. I always admired the men of The Great Escape along with all POW’s who did all they could in their own to bring the war to the enemy behind the wire. The real story behind The Great Escape is so much better than the Hollywood version…but it was the movie that got me to reading and collecting all I could on the story of the March 1944 escape. This man lived a long and well lived life. May he rest in peace and a salute for his service in WW II.

I guess it was after 12 midnight here !
Ok….. guess I might have written this after midnight…just remembering a great fighter pilot in one heck of a fighter group. The mere fact he was under the infulence only adds more to the skills this man had for sure. I always post something about Maj Preddy on Dec 25th…the sad day of his death & March 24…….day of The Great Escape ! Just honoring the memory of these men who I respect.

P-38 Lighting defected in Italy to Axis powers !
Great topic here forum members… I do remember reading a story from the USA WW II magazine ” Air Classics” years ago about a pilot who defected ..seems the the right word here … in a P-38 Lighting to the Axis powers in Italy during the war. This is going off memory and a story I have not heard before I read this story years ago. Will try to find the old copy and post it here . I want to say that a USAAF downed fighter pilot during the war took and Me-109 or FW-190 off from a German airfield and flew it back to England … Bruce Carr ????? maybe I a dreaming this up ???? Do remember the great scene from the British WW II film .. ” One who got away”??? about a captured Luftwaffen pilot who tries to steal a Hurricane from an airfield . Sent to Canada and he made his escape to the USA before the US entered the war ! Good topic……………. Hey BlueNoser just hit the big 56 this past week… my memory is slipping a bit !!!!!!! Now from post from years past… what about the secret flight of Wing Commander Doulgas Bader ……………err never mind !!!!

He gave back to society as well !
Noted as well his contributions to British society & mankind in general .. a man who lived a life full of vigor and doing something to make society a better place to live . I am always amazed at the bios of many we have posted here over the last years or so on this forum. A real inspiration to many I am sure who knew this man ! He did his nation proud for sure !
Rest in Peace Sir !

My condolences to his family & friends !
I remember Mr Doe from the Channel 4 Spitfire Ace series … my condolences to all his family & friends. Without a doubt we owe that generation so much for the freedoms we have today !

I’ve also just watched Secret History,’The Few’ which I think was a bit controversial when it was shown.
This was because it concentrated on the class divisions and bad training in the RAF at the time.
Pilots featured included Gordon Batt,Charles Palliser,David Cox,Eric Poole,John Pattison,Iain Hutchinson,Ludwik Martel and Tony Bartley.
Tony Bartley described the friendly warning from the police in this..
One or two of those interviewed, although not sounding bitter, still seemed pretty rankled about the treatment they recieved as Sgt.Pilots.
Very good documentary,well worth watching.
Thanks Steve not sure of exact title !
Steve:
Not sure of the exact title… were both Yanks and I have a few Pal documenaries on BOB pilots I bought on ebay etc…. but manybe some will remember the segment my friend speaks of. Maybe someone will have recorded it and will know for sure. Thanks for the input on this ! Hopefully someone will upload it to Youtube so we can all enjoy it !
Thanks !

Saw it last night and thought it was a fantastic film, stuck to history and the flying scenes were fantastic ! A film in which Mr Nolan honored those veterans & the boaters who risked all to save many ! The music and photography were brilliant !!! Its part of world war II history..hope it will inspire other directors to make their WW II films !!! This Yank thought it was a brilliant film ! BlueNoser352!
