Right before he passed away, Mr Rudhall sent me a very nice email on some questions I had about a second printing of his very well researched Battle of Britain book on the movie. I bought one at Hendon and it got water damaged and would love to find another copy. I ask him to look into the possibility of a second printing and he said he would inquire. I sure wish FLYPAST could do this . I have looked far and wide and no luck on locating a copy. Anyone have one for sale, look to the new world for this buyer. Very happy to see that MGM put all the extras on this DVD!
Thats a great question Trumper, I have heard many good things about his talks here in the states and wonder what ever became of all his materials he collected over the years. I know he had film shot while the production was going on. I had a copy of his book and it got water damaged, would love to find another copy for anyone out there. Wonder if anyone ever recorded him while he made a presentation about the film? I’ve already placed an oder for mine from the UK. Nice to see they placed all the extras on this version of the DVD.
Dave, seems like I read something about this as well, however it also talked about flight between Sweden and the UK run by the USAAF. There was a program on in the UK back in the late 90’s called “Whispers In The Air” who’s subject matter delt with the rising number of USAAF bomber crews going into Sweden and Switzerland on suspect battle damage or so the program hinted at. I Know it caused a stir here in the states among many a Eighth AF veteran. I was told by a friend of mine who flew with the 390 BG, about unmarked aircraft going into Sweden to remove a certian number of “guest” of the Swedish government! Not sure if Sir Douglas was …..err never mind !
Australian Rilfeman !!!!
There has been two documentaries here in the states ,one by the folks at PBS, WGBH-TV Boston and one by the Discovery Channel. Showing this computer simulation shoot down of the Red Baron. Looks like one well placed 303 round did the trick. From watching both programs , looks like Capt Roy Brown was not the one who hit him. The Discovery Channel documentary put forth some solid info, but its been a long time ago, they did find one of the Australian trooper still alive who witnessed the Barons death at the scene!
Snowy Evans got the nod….lucky shot!
Intresting note on crew mission reports
Paul:
Thanks and I came across this on another website, I thought it was of note from a historical point, about the crew mission diarys. That the higher command would allow these personal diary reports to be recieved after the war. It was a good decision for all us historians to read and treasure after the days of WWII have long since been over !
Thanks
Nice website Denis!
Denis, thanks for the link, lots of information and enjoy looking it over. Will try and locate that book on the raid!
Thanks for the info on the Amiens Raid !
Denis& Dave , thanks for the info on the Amiens Prison raid, will try and find
some books on the topic. The FLYPAST article has some great information and listed all the squardons and crews who flew in the mission. I thought it was intresting the mission had one Mosquito camera equiped to record the mission and it made three passes over the prison after the raid to record the prisoners running out the buldings. Wonder why the raid did not have Spitfires flying top cover over the Mosquitos? I noticed the Typhoos were on the raid as well. Wondering if Mosquito’s normally carried mounted cameras like USAAF aircraft did on daily combat operations? This would make for a wonderful film, the story line is outstanding, no if we can only get some air worthy Mosquitos for the film !
Nice looking Jackets!!!!
Jasonp51D and Black Knight, thanks for posting those great looking A-2 Jackets. Most impressive indeed, I remember seeing some great originals in the small museum of the 100th BG. in the UK. That one thing I most enjoy about coming to Duxford , folks put on their A-2’s and its nice to see this
tradition continue where it all got started. Would love to have an Eastman A-2, but they seem to make only small sizes. From seeing many originals from veterans of the Eighth, size 44 was considered xlarge. Herein the states , they have some excellent originals at the new Eighth Museum in Savannah, Georgia, the Air Force Museum at Dayton, Ohio. Also the 390th museum in Arizona has a nice collection on dispaly. My all time favorite is from the crew of a 401st B-17 called Diabolical Angel . Back in the early 90’s I located every member of the crew and the two waist gunners who had this great looking
“Angel” on the back of their A-2 jackets. If you have any books on Nose art, this jacket is always featured. One of the gunners told me he gave another GI, 5 bucks to do this classic artwork. Sadly neither man still has his original.
Thanks again men for posting those great looking A-2 jackets!
Glad no one was hurt in B-17 landing mishap!
This is a bit of bad news, but hopefully she can be repaired and back on the airshow circuit soon. I have seen this lovely bird in person and hated to hear this news. Did anyone see the footage of the WNBC-TV helicopter crash, it was filmed live on New York television by rival station WABC-TV. Glad all three got out ok, I work in the tv news business and always say a prayer each day when our Jet Ranger comes back safely. I believe this B-17 is owned by the EAA?
Channel 5 D-Day Documentary?
Greetings from BlueNoser352, is this the documentary where they take young people of today and take them thur military trainning like they did back in 1944? I read about this on a UK television website, guess reality television taking hold worldwide! No real MG-42’s to face this time around I hope !
Andrew thanks for the great photos!!
Andrew, as a long time member here in the states of The Mighty Eighth Historical Society and someone who has explored many old bases of the Eighth in the UK, thanks for the photos and links to the musuem. Very impressive website, full of great detailed info on this special group ! Some where in my collection of books on The Eighth, is one titled “Carpetbaggers”, a very impressive book by the son of one of the group members! A few years ago at the impressive museum in Savannah, Georgia USA I had the pleasure of meeting and talking to one of the pilots of the 801st,he flew a Mossie. His likeness and aircraft is depicted in the Gil Cohen painting “Eyes of The Eighth”. If your travels ever take you across the big pond, it would be well worth your time to visit the impressive musuem of the Mighty Eighth, in Savannah, Georgia. Looks like this is one museum I need to visit , congrats to those who have built this as a tribute to the men who flew from there!
Thanks for the note on BoB DVD !!!
Thanks for the update on the coming Region 2 DVD titles, will have to order them to get the new disc with “noted extras” DVD’s of these two movies sold in the states do not come with any extras. Been looking for the documentary on the making of “A Bridge Too Far ” since I saw in on network television back in 1980.
Can’t understand why the DVD on “The Battle of Britain” was not released in the Uk first before here in the states as it should have been. After all the battle did happen in the skies of the UK !
I sure some marketing director does not know this!
WOW….100 P-51’s in 2006!
Saw this today when I finally could get onto the new site for MustangsMustangs.com. Wow…to say the least …maybe 100 plus Mustangs in one place. More than the previous gathering in Florida back a few years ago. Sadly no one produced a DVD or viedo of this event. Hope they can pull this one off. Stead Airport , In Reno, Neveda will be the place to be in 2006! Bet you’ll find a nice collection of 352nd Mustangs at this one! Now…hope they can line up a great production company to record this one!!!!!! I would enjoy hearing 100 Merlins in person and on a DVD !
Call on the Migjhty Eighth!!
B-52’s !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! B-1B’s……….!!!
Band Of Brothers on the History Channel here in the states!
The outstanding series Band of Brothers is now running on The History Channel here in the States. I would think the series would also appear on History Channel International soon as well.
Just wondering if the ABC 1963-1967 television show “COMBAT” ever run in the UK or Europe? This was an outstanding series about the US GI fighting in the ETO during WWII. Wondering if it ever ran on BBC or other European television stations!
Thanks!
