Couple of jackets done by a friend…………..
a very senstive topic
Here is a link to a discussion about this documentary and the topic of bomber crews diverting to Sweden & Switzerland … not a topic many 8th vets will discuss as I have found out. Brings a bit of slience and ok…time to change the subject !!!!!
A-2 Jacket From” Whispers IN The Air”
Saw this A-2 jacket with the Ducks on the back from a still off of a documentary called ” Whispers In The Air”. Which aired here in the USA sometime in the 1990’s. The program centered around a charge made by a top US govt offical in Europe ( Sweden ) during the early days of the Eighth Air Force bomber campaign…that to many undamaged USAAF bombers were landing in both Sweden & Switzerland without any damage or little damage . He felt this was becoming a trend and wanted USAAF top brass to look into this problem.
Gen Hap Arnold ordered an investigation into the situation but really nothing was found that could warrent futher investigation…. Also the program delt with something the RAF called ” LMF” Lack of Moral Fiber “… about the case of airmen with to much stress avoiding missions ..and how the RAF delt with this issue.
This shot came from perhaps an airfield in Sweden as USAF Officers looked over a field on interned & downed B-24’s & B-17’s sitting parked . I’ve talked to many old 8th veterans about this and it was discussed among some flight crews who thought some might have taken advantage of this situation and flew their aircraft to these countries but most felt it was necessary to avoid becoming a POW and if the opportunity presented itself to them…they would do it as well. I liked the A-2 and wish I had a better shot of it ……
Thanks ……….. BlueNoser352!
