Nose Art on Maj Preddys P-51 CRIPES A’ MIGHTY 3RD!

Nice close up taken on the hardstand at Bodney of Preddy’s P-51 Mustang! The Major was quite fond to say this as he rolled the dice in many a poker game with the 352nd…so he named his plane after very colorful phrase. He did name his first aircraft , a P-40 War Hawk he flew while in service in Australia he called “Tar Heel”, named after his home state of North Carolina.

The last know photograph of Maj Preddy taken at Bodney!

This is perhaps the last know recorded photograph taken inside the control tower at Bodney before a mission in Nov of 1944. Col John C Meyer is seen in the photograph as well ,he later became the USAF Chief of Staff & was an ace as well with the 352nd. Having been inside the control tower at Bodney, I always think of the scene and how different a world it was back then during war time operations! Wish the control tower could be saved as a very fitting memorial to all of those who served with the 352nd & our great British Allies!

Time to meet the Media (even back in 1944)

Days after the mission of 6th Aug 1944 , Maj Preddy meets an American war correspondent Arch Whitehouse to be interviewed about the mission.

Maj Preddy greeted by Bodney ground crew !

When the word spread around Bodney that one of its own had scored a record 6 victories on one mission, many came to greet the Major on his return to Bodney. The Major accomplished this feat despite getting little sleep the night before , when he was engaged in a high stakes poker game with fellow 352nd pilots. They were not going to fly a mission that day, but orders changed all that and Preddy had to fly on this Aug 6th 1944…history records what took place on that day!

CRIPES A’MIGHTY Returns to Bodney on Aug 6th 1944

Here are a series of shots of the return of Maj George E. Preddy Jr, after he pulls up to the hardstand at Bodney. The Major has just shot down 6 ME-109’s in Combat over the Third Reich , while escorting USAAF Bombers on a mission to Germany!

Skyraider3rd….thanks and I have enjoyed looking at your outstanding art work. I have many more 352nd Mustangs from my collection. Now that I have finally figured out how to use this scanner..will now share many of my WWII aviation photographs with this fine group of historic aviation warbird lovers! These particular photographs came from Sam Sox , who has helped to write the groups history and has gathered hundreds of 352nd Fighter Group photographs, both offical and from veterans of the group. Many of these photographs came from the book by Joe Noah ( Major Preddy’s cousin) and Sam Sox “George Preddy Top Mustang Ace” published by Motorbooks International ISBN 0-87938-531-6 Glad you enjoyed the photos and will post many more.

Maj Preddy returns from his Aug 6th 1944 mission !

One of my favorite photographs of Maj Preddy, shown shortly after his famed Aug 6th escort mission , where he downed 6 ME-109’s on this mission.
Was recommended for the Medal of Honor, but recieved the DSC for his defense of Eighth Air Force B-17’s on this escort mission. This is one fighter pilot that always out front in attacking the Luftwaffe!

The Major and his A-2 Nose Art at Bodney!

Found this nice shot of Major George E. Preddy Jr, from Greensboro, North Carolina. The top ranking P-51 Mustang Ace from the 352nd Fighter Group wearing his A-2 at Bodney. Donald Duck was front and center with the Major on his many victories in the ETO back in 1943 & 1944 !
