Hi Jackattack,
Interesting to hear of the requirement for new spars, are the current ones ‘WW2 originals’, or ‘new’ when it got rebuilt at St Athan a few years back?Chumpy.
It would be nice to know. They were not new when the wings were fitted at St Athan. Thats one of the reasons we are changing them.
MK356
Last chance before we begin painting. We have researched this to death and think that the top engine cowling and tank panel are dark gray/green camo. The rest of the aircraft is silver.
Any advances on that.
I heard of a good one regarding an RAF Chinook:
One of the droop stops on the forward head sheared off, and the heli was kept running while a solution was found. The problem being that if the head was shut down, the unlocked blade would have chopped the poor wokka in half. The mechanics were tasked with getting as many mattresses from the block as they could and a giraffe (hydraulic steps) was placed in line with the advancing blades against the fuselage, and the matresses piled aginst the giraffe to protect the blade….
As the rotor head was shut down, the rotor brake was applied with force, stopping the head in a single revolution. As the unlocked blade lost its lift and went beyond the missing droop stop, it hit the mattressed giraffe and skipped over the fuselage saving the rest of the heli.
How true it is, who knows….:D
It was one of the the aft head droop stops. A tradesman found it lying on the pan. A Puma was sent to Boscombe Down as it was thought they had a video of an American aircraft with the same problem and what they did as a solution. Unfortunately it wasn’t so so they made a giraffe as you stated with plywood to stop the blade. Video was taken and slowed down to find which droop stop it was then the engines were stopped and the blades were stopped within 1.5 revolutions. I was there watching it all happen. All true except the front head bit.
nice F-86 in the background of pic 5. does it fly?
Yes it does.
Naturally, its early days and there are few straight forward Majors but are you expecting many ‘problems’ given that it is a reasonably recent rebuild? I know the lanc had a few ‘interesting’ moments (rudders, bomb bay door skins).
Are there any additions to the standard major scheme of work?
Initial inspections show the ircraft to be in good condition. The MK500 engine is being replaced by a MK266 which was the original build. The MK500 will be fitted to the Lancaster. The wings are being put in the jig as there were a few issues with MK356 performance. Other than that, at this stage, Ops normal.
What’s the little plaque in the cockpit- BBMF crest? Squadron badge?
Not sure. It says what type of aircraft it is. I am down to ARCo Monday and will have a look unless one of the BBMF guys has an answer first.

Thanks for the update & pics Jack.
Btw, will she have the earlier non broad chord rudder she originally had when she was first restored, fitted again?
Cheers
Paul
No. The rudder is staying the same. The big one is better for crosswinds so less restrictive crosswind limits.

Ready for stripping
MK356 today. She is getting the paint stripped off over the weekend back to bare metal.

I put a link about it last week.
Anybody know the progress on Tom Blairs mk ix which is being overhauled at arco?
Due to fly next week I believe.
Very nice cant wait too see it in its new colours scheme 😎 Just wondering was this Spitfire out much at all for the Airshow season? And when is the Dakota ZA947 have maintenance or has it already been looked at ?
James
MK356 flew just over 31 hrs this season. The Dak had a Minor servicing in 2005/06. It has an annual servicing at BBMF.
Lancaster Maintenance DVD
Roger White, an ex BBC cameraman documented PA474 from its arrival at Coventry last year until its departure back to Coningsby. He produced a DVD lasting 2:30 minutes and gives a great insight to all that is involved in maintaining PA474. The intention was to have it for sale on the LLA stand with the proceeds going to help BBMF and other causes LLA assist. I hope he has managed to get them produced. I have a copy and it is very good, although of no interest to my wife. Keep an eye out for it.
Spitfire
How about these taken this summer.

Paint.
I have seen this bird wearing several different coats over the years but am curious to know how much does a different coat of paint cost to apply and how long does the respray take?
1517 man hours over about 10 days and a lot of money (9% of the total cost of the project) . 16 years for the paint (every second major maintenance for a complete bare metal strip). Scuff and paint every 8 years when the art and sqn codes get changed.
Thistlegorm
I have dived the Thistlegorm about 12 times now in the last 3 years and it is collapsing in on itself at the front. I think it is only a short time before the contents of 1 and 2 holds, which have the aircraft parts, get crushed by the upper decking.
It is a great dive, especially at night.
