A nice story but sadly not true regarding the BBMF Lancaster. I can tell you now that no parts of this aircraft are on the BBMF Lancaster.

P7350 is in bits at ARCo. The wings are off and the spars are stamped 1939 and 1940. It is having a re-spar. Here are a few shots in its current state.

    Airtest

Thursday or Friday at the earliest for airtest. ARCo don’t pick the time. I do.

Weigh. Wingtips and the 266 engine which replaced the 500. CofG is fine.

    Painting

One of the main reasons that it is painted in bits is you can’t get a whole aircraft into the spray bay at ARCo.

    Final Scheme

Jack, do you have an illustration you can post of the final colour scheme?

    It better look like this.

So why has MJ552 got a black spinner? Surely that’s a 2TAF identification marking introduced in Feb 1945……….;)

And what makes you think it should be red spinner/black codes, why not blue spinner/blue codes or also red spinner/ red codes…….

I didn’t colour the spinner on MJ552, only the green as I don’t care about that one at the moment.

Using various computer programmes, consultation with various versed colour scheme specialists, books and experience suggest a more likely scheme to consist of the red spinner and black codes. We have enough evidence to support this and no evidence at present, to support any other scheme consisting of blues or reds. Not an easy one this for sure. Corgi and Airfix want the colours to make the model so I have to decide on something.
I tried to contact the 601 Sqn association and have e-mailed a contact of an existing crew member from the Sqn when it operated in Italy to see if I can get any more info from these sources.

If not, it’s going to look like the last picture I posted.

I think the greys have won it.

    Paint scheme

Thanks to all who responded. Pink it is then. All good info and more for me and Fluffy to discuss. Enhanced photos courtesy of RAF Coningsby Photo section will be provided to ARCo and a few others with the best guess resulting in the final scheme. You can’t say you didn’t have an input.

    White paint

Apparently white paint was used to aid inspection and to reflect light to provide a brighter environment. Unfortunately all it did was to hide any problems.

Spar replacement. Could there be confusion?

Are we talking about the ‘carry through spars’ on the fuselage or the ‘spar booms’ on the wings?

    Mark

Both. Wing spars and carry through spars require replacement.

    Paint schemes

As always, the paint scheme takes up a lot of time and effort and is always wrong in some respect. Very difficult when there are only B/W photographs to go on. MK won’t be bare metal and will be painted silver for the obvious reasons that it is a working aircraft, corrosion control, ease of maintenance etc.

I thought tonight was a useful and educational exercise for me and will take that forward to tomorrows discussions with BBMF and ARCo.

    Thanks to you all.

    Wings

The Cannon config will be kept as it is and you are correct that the wings were from another aircraft and were ‘adjusted’ to fit. Moving the cannon config is quite an expensive task and with all the other work and the fact that MK356 will be depicting something else in a few years time, it isn’t a priority. However, it isn’t at the bottom of the wish list either.

I have a budget and have to share it between the fighters for the next 5 to 7years. The re-spar takes a large chunk so other ‘nice to have’ changes have to be put on hold.

I’ll be intrigued to know if you find out why the aircraft was deemed wonky by the pilots!

So will I. It had a high fuel burn and slow speed for recognized power settings. It could be due to the blade pitch angles, incorrect engine and lack of wing tips, all of which are being addressed during this servicing.

All will be revealed if we get to the bottom of it. Did you like the Lancaster DVD from Coventry. They seem to be selling well.
