They would have done but somebody nicked the saucer and not matt but satin or semi gloss
I bet you all knocked off as soon as I left the hangar.
A few from today. The markings were going on as I left.
Primed and ready
A brief glimps in primer.
Off jacks and standing on her own 3 legs.
U/C functionals and blowdown completed. It is off jacks for painting.
Is the project on time?
When is she due to be completed she is looking good look forward to seeing her back in the air and at our air displat later in the year
The project is 20 days behind schedule. This was due to the flap tube material having a long lead time and not being available. Retro Track and Air did a great job of machining and assembling the finished product when the material eventually arrived. Apart from that, everything has gone to plan. Everyone involved has been pulling in the same direction. It has been quite a straight forward project to this point. I will post the dates of airtest and return to Coningsby after the paint job is finished.
Flap tubes have arrived
Progress continues. Port flap tubes arrived and are fitted. Stbd ones should be here tomorrow. I have added a few more photographs at the start of the thread.
From all these wonderful pictures, it appears that the interior has remained untouched- how often does that need stripping out and repainting etc then?
Inside doesn’t look too bad. I have added a few photo’s of the interior and will work on a refurbishment plan for the interior for the next big servicing. Currently it is limited to inspection and touch ups as required.
Fantastic, yet again!
What are these wing boom repairs you speak of then? Is that anything to do with the new spar she had put in a few years back?
Drooling, anyhow. 🙂
There are a load of bolts on the wing. We have to remove a sample every 300 flying hrs and check the hole for corrosion and cracking. If there is corrosion, the hole is reamed out and new larger bolts fitted. Some corrosion was found and hence the repar. The bolts had to be specially made. This was managed by EWAD at RAF Waddington. As the bolts were out, the outboard engines and fuel tanks couldn’t be fitted. All is well now and the outboard engines should be going in next week.
A couple of more photos showing some progress
Flap tube material has been delivered and the contractor is busy making the tubes up. Wing bolts are being delivered on 12th March so BAeS can carry out the remedial action on the wing boom. It is still going to plan. Substantial progress should be visable by the end of the month.
Inner engines fitted
It’s coming together slowly. Inboard engines are fitted.
*spoilt once again for great piccies*
Oh dear, sounds like the flap tubes are starting to hold things up somewhat?
They should have been delivered 3 days ago to the contractor for machining, but that didn’t happen. The wing bolts shouild be delivered by 9th March with BAeS doing some remedial action and additional NDT starting on the 12th March. The flap tubes have been the critical path since we decided to replace them. Items we found damaged during the servicing will be sent to QinetiQ I believe, for investigation to why the problem occured and to see if we need to do more inspections.
The old flap tubes are probably going to Corgi for them to make little models of the Lancaster for public sale. A similar thing happened to the spar of BBMF Spitfire AB which we did a teardown on.
We are still looking at 10-20th April as an output date.

Progress continues
A few more photos from today. Inboard engines will be going on this week. Port U/C is on. Still waiting for the flap tubes and wing boom bolts. Until we get these, the outboard fuel tanks and the outboard engines can’t be fitted. A busy month lies ahead.
A few more shots now some of the engine bearers have been fitted.
Is she being painted there after re-assembly?
Yes. Done at Coventry. We are waiting for wing boom bolts and the flap tube assemblies. Once we have these, the wing can go back together then the aircraft painted.
So how long do we have to wait before the repainting commences on PA474 at Coventry?
Most of the aircraft should be back together by the end of this month. The engines are being delivered next week. We are waiting on the manufacture of the flap tubes. This is the critical path as the painting won’t take place until the flap tubes are in and the wing has been reassembled. This is scheduled for the end March, beginning April and will take approx 10 days.
