I do agree 1982-85 would’ve been a prime time to have a conventional war east versus west if you were ever going to. Eagle numbers were up and the 70s Phantom force had finally retired as a front line type (still even AIM-7F and AIM-9J/L aren’t very good weapons and R24/R13-1M1 are most definitely contemporary or if you believe the Russians, superior).

Don’t forget that the F-117 went IOC in 83 and 1st flew in 81. It would probably have been rushed into service during hostilities. I can bet you that it would have given the soviets a nasty surprise. I can bet you that all command and control would have been dead within hours without the Russians knowing what hit them.

    here are some great snippits!

RAFAEL is offering a 2,000 lb and 1,000 lb versions of the Spice, all these weapons can be fitted within the F-35’s internal weapons bay. The 500 lb version of the Spice, currently in development, could introduce multiple weapon carriage capability for the F-35, along with a full load of air-to-air missiles.

I wonder if they will need source code to integrate all of this?

Here are a few questions regarding large scale a2a.

    1. How do modern air forces and even forces in the 70s -80s deal with fratricide on a large scale?

    2. with no blue force tracker or IFF type devices how the Warsaw pact countries and even NATO have dealt with this?

    3. was this a factor in bekka?

    4. And finally how would a large modern AF like China manage this over Taiwan?
You probably have the largest concentration of air defenses on earth all with in 150 miles of each other. PAC2 on 1 side and S-300 on the other. I would be terrified if I was a F-18E/F pilot flying CAPs over Taiwan.

When Boeing claims a 100mill price for the F-15SE is this 100 mil for just the kit, or for the full air frame? would it break the bank to refurbish or kit most F-15cs and F-15Es to SE standard? what does the kit cost alone? The money on the ariframe has already been spent. i cant see spending over 20mill just for kits.

The programme now has less than 90 days to complete 124 flight tests to remain on track by the end of the year. Lockheed also has other commitments to meet. At least two more flight-test aircraft – BF-5 and AF-4 – are due to complete first flight before the end of the year.

The Turkish and Chinese air forces secretly participated in a military drill in Konya as part of the “Anatolian Eagle” war games, prompting a reaction from Washington, daily Taraf reported Thursday.

Taraf based its report on Turkish and Western military sources, who confirmed that the military drills took place but did not state the exact dates of the games or what kind of aircraft were involved.

Washington has requested information on the matter from Turkey, the report added.

Last year, Ankara excluded Israel from the war games, reportedly because of political tension that arose with Tel Aviv after the Israeli-led war in Gaza in January 2009.

The Turkish government decided to freeze all military exercises with Israel in response to the killing by Israeli commandos of nine people on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla in May. Last year, Ankara excluded Tel Aviv from the same exercise, which prompted fellow NATO members the United States and Italy to withdraw from the drills. Turkey had to conduct the exercise on a national instead of an international level.

Since the early 2000s, Turkey, a NATO member, has conducted war games in the central Anatolian province of Konya with other members of the alliance or non-member friendly nations. But this year was the first time a military drill was conducted with China.

The U.S. administration reportedly contacted the Turkish foreign and defense ministries and asked why the drill was conducted and what kind of maneuvers were practiced.

This could comprise the f-35 tech, if Turkey keeps heading in this direction.

You will no doubt relax and have faith when i mention abbreviations like:
JDRADM JSOW AARGM HSAD, after all, JSF F-35 will use’em 🙂

Ed: Or why not simply replace them both with dedicated SAM hunters for convenience: http://defense-update.com/images/harpy.jpg

But the F-35 has the luxury of at least being stealthy while using those weapons.

I would assume they will use HARM and MALD vs air defense, like everyone else.

against a S-300? a harm? I didn’t realize mald made all air defenses ww obsolete. There is room for a healthy bit of cynicism in this thread.

1.Why do you guys keep discussing engine alignment, when you yourselves have said this isn’t the final engine?

    2. What good is a hidden engine when the air vents and rear nozzles still compromise RCS?

    3. If the nacelles will be redesigned in the future for a new engine then what difference does it make?

    4. How will the T-50 deal with high end air defenses with so many compromises?
High end like S-300, aegis SM2, Patriot2, and the like?

    By Emmanuel Jarry

MADL Integration on F-22 May Slip
MADL Integration on F-22 May Slip: The Multifunction Advanced Data Link, planned for the F-22’s increment 3.2 software update, is probably out until further notice, according to Lockheed Martin’s F-22 program manager, George Shultz. Speaking with reporters last week at the company’s F-22 plant in Marietta, Ga., Shultz said it’s not official yet, but “we’ve been hearing” that Air Combat Command “is moving toward delaying MADL.” This data link is designed to give the F-22 the means of sharing data with other platforms without compromising its stealth cover. It is also planned for the B-2 and F-35.

How Much do you think the F-117 and long range cruise missiles changed the game when it comes to air warfare? There is a lot of talk about air war and mass formations. But do you feel stealth and stand off weapons made a difference in the early wars they where used in?

Me pointing out the drawbacks to the Russians going with legacy
Engine isn’t an assumption. It’s not an assumption that
5th gen engines are difficult to build. I think the future engine will
    Make or break the T-50.

Grey the statement was made that that T-50 is superior to the F-22 and the F-35 aerodynamically. and there equal when it comes to stealth. Are we not allowed to openly debate this? if this cant be debated then no other aircraft should be mentioned in this thread.
