Maybe…..but taxation is necessary and was happening long before anybody had ever heard of global warming.

Would you be happier if the government ignored global warming and just increased income tax?

Taxation is of course necessary….for things we need.

Your 2nd statement is an oxymoron, they will increase taxes to the maximum limit that is possible, and any excuse will do. The green types have handed them a goose laying golden eggs.
It isn’t a matter of ignoring GW, it’s pretending that we can do something about it, and making you pay for the honour!
It is the duty of the government to force you into a direction and then burn the bridge. Once cornered, the taxman puts your testicles in a vice. It doesn’t matter who, from Nazi to Commy and all points in between.

The gullible and misinformed including about 95 – 98% of all serious scientific opinion.

    Moggy

    Moggy, that’s rot.
95-98% agree that climate change is happening is the probable statistic (Considering that only a few years ago the scientific community was divided as to whether it was changing or not).
Very few reliable studies can prove that it is the fault of mankind and his machines.
When the figures start to look good, it’s news is suppressed! The Ozone hole is now as small as it was 30 years ago, for example. Our (Only a few nations) banning of CFC’s could not have repaired it in such a short time.
As I said, a two day eruption from a decent sized Volcano put’s more carp in the air than all the cars ever made, and Jellystone Nat. Park is due to blow (Ecologically speaking) and that will likely kill the Earth.

The Governments are driving this fear as an excuse to drag more tax from your hard earned. Nobody can ever trust a Government, on anything. Especially the UK, which is only slightly less corrupt than Nigeria….but the UK is sneaky about it.

Somehow I think that if it were aliens who can invent ways to travel the galaxy they would have come up with ways to cover their tracks.

Could it have been the space shuttle coming back home? I heard it was due back soon?

I doubt if it was the shuttle, it doesn’t enter the atmosphere over UK.

    Here’s a long shot….

In the early 80’s, a few films were digitally re-mastered and shown on C4 on Sunday afternoons. One of them was the classic “The General” with the great Buster Keaton.
Another was an unknown film (These days) but was a classic. It was called McTeague. The original (Silent, from the 1920’s or 30’s) was something like 7 hours long! It was shortened several times and they got it to nearly 4 hours for general release. It is a superb film, with a story so gripping (And a superb ending) I’m surprised it hasn’t been re-made for the modern age.
If anyone knows where to buy it, I’d appreciate it.
And, did anyone else see it?

Are you 100% sure it wasn’t ISS? It can be incredibly bright. The red light after it passed could be due to it being lit through Earths atmosphere by a low Sun… 17:50hrs… maybe !

For other satellites I find it amusing to watch NASA’s J-Track 3D on my laptop in the garden…. after BBQs ! You don’t see them all, of course. Low orbits are easiest to see, but then you need the sun just below the observed horizon to light the satellite.

No, the ISS is due about now. At 17:50 it was very dark, but a high alt. object would pick up red reflection I suppose.
And, the path of object was slightly arc, upt to an azimith and down again.
I’m a bit of a stargazer so I know what the sat.s and ISS look like.
    It’s all a bit odd.

Knock the programme all you like, but why not give the producers a little praise for intentionally making a record for a worthy charity?

Whichever way you care to look at it, from a cynical or optimistic point of view, over a million quid has gone to a good cause because of it.

Maybe it’s also long past time to consider whether or not sending troops to far flung countries to fight unwinnable wars is a good idea?

OK, I can give the producers a little praise for that….but it’s beaten down by the fact that the producers main concern is ratings and viewer figures, so anything benevolent will do nicely.

Yes, more money to the appeal the better, no matter how clandestine the Altruism.

    Interesting picures, Mr Blue Sky.

But I can’t for the life of me figure out what’s odd about the Westland Whirlwind ‘cloudscape’ picture.

Oh… I just know I’m going to regret this!

Is it a Meteor body and spinners off a Mozzy?

Love the Hangar shot, even the burnt in shadows LoL. Super.

Well, if you’re going to have a “General Discussion” forum (not something I’ve contributed to before, IIRC) then perhaps O/T “thread creep” is not strictly applicable… But I think it’s finished creeping now in any case.

    Aye.
Discussions wander naturally. If we get into a topic that was originally related, can’t be expected to start a newun. Can we?

    Anyway.
    On topic.
Dewerring the Conflict, the Falklands that is (See note 1 for thread creep) a very close friend of mine in 2 Para shot and killed an American mercenary on the Argentinian side. My friend is not prone to telling tall tales about any subject, ne’er mind one so graphic. The detail of how his troop knew they were Americans is not for here. Our allies are not always 100% I suppose I’m saying. I wonder if the same mentallity of mecenary would now join the Afghans or the Iraqis?
There were other US Mercenaries that were captured too, but I don’t know what happened to them.

(Note 1) Sorry, can’t call it a War because if Mrs T called it a War, the policy of paying the soldiers widows a War Pension would enact, and that’s less than what they got/get.

Just as soon as I’ve edited them!

Old Shape… It’s actually a remarkably cheap place to get to if you’re happy with basic hotels. I can’t recommend visiting highly enough.

Thanks for your kind words, guys! 🙂

We are a cheap Hotel kinda family. “Rough Guide” level. Egypt at £5.00 a night double room, similar in India. Sometimes with two breakfasts at that price! Having done India on a Budget, and travelled 2nd class on the train (Only 700 in the carriage made for 150) we can take anything. (And that was our honeymoon in 2001!!!) Details of your Hotel and prices please, I’m perusing ready for next summer.
