Thanks for that. DVD recorder will be set for that. It is a real gem of a programme and an unbelievable mission to even contemplate…never mind complete.
Off topic, this often happens…..I don’t watch much TV, I never read a TV guide…..I think of a programme and it appears on TV after a week or so. Perhaps I’m mentally logged on to somebody that is reading a guide??
I also think about somebody, and they phone me.
I hope Clarkson doubters watched the “Raid”.
I’ve seen the doc. before but it still moves me, and IMO the enthusiasm and amazement in Clarkson’s voice really does those hero’s justice. Hero used in the most indefatigable way.
5 VC’s. Should have been dozens. And 1 of the VC’s awarded was “Demanded” by the German high office.
How wars change eh. Can’t see the Taliban contacting our CiC suggesting that such bravery be awarded.
Just kill the idiot.
No wastage of soldiers lives though, just a standard CIA hit team. Like they should have done to Saddo.
Muggabe is the sort of person I’d joyfully kill on live TV, with dial-in audiences picking the method of death. TV rights probably to Sky.
Profits to charity of course.
I always sit on the fence on such matters, when I come off the fence I get banned from forums.

Hi Richard.
Others might do different, but the way i crop images is as follows,
Set crop size to 15x10in @ 300ppi, this is the largest print i am likely to have done.
Try to crop the image so the plane has a little room to “fly” into.
Crop static shots so the horizon is horizontal, obvious, i know but easily overlooked.
Once saved, if the image is going to be put on a website, go to image dimensions and change the size by the ppi, i generally use 750 or 800 wide, then apply and save for web. This means the picture will be viewed at actual pixels.
You may well be doing all this already, so sorry if ive gone over old ground.
Dean:)
As above, but cropping is artistic as well as functional. As for re-sizing, there are two methods I use. “Save for Web” in Photoshop, in which case I ensure that the longest side is 500 pixels. Any wider and it does not fit a standard screen leaving viewer having to side scroll (Which is most annoying!!)
Also, there is a free download from Microsoft official website called “Image resizer” and that is simple…just right click on the file in browser, select the resize you want (It has about 5 choices) and it saves another file with same name but “Copy” on the end of it.
I personally don’t load high quality images to the web, they take too long to load and also people steal them.
Pity it can’t fly over the place that designed and (Possibly) built it. Chadderton.
Where was C o Lincoln built? So many factories were knocking ’em out dewerring the war.
By coincidence this is being repeated on Sunday night – BBC2 at 9pm (straight after Top Gear) – a real “Clarksonfest”.
But this might give some a chance to judge him on his serious side.Getting back to the Spitfires. Whether you like JC or loathe him one good result of the forthcoming feature in TG is that it should have contributed three nice fat (hopefully) wadges of “BBC £s” to their owners funds – helping to keep them flying.
Roger Smith.

No, that’s not what the poem is saying at all.
Ozymandias originally placed the inscription on the statue as a boast of his might, power and riches, not as a lament or a warning.
Do you see what it’s getting at, now?
Yes, I saw it then. King of Kings says “I’m top neddy”. But later, it’s all bare. That’s what the poems about.
I’m also amazed, you are a Man U fan, and have some intellect. Wonders never cease 🙂

I think that it was an off day!
As far as I know, the only “airliners” built by Boulton & Paul were pre-war twin engined biplanes. I say “airliners” because the three models in question – the P.8, P.64 and P.71A – were designed/used primarily for mail and freight.
Whether there were any post war projects, that existed on paper and not much more, I cannot say. Maybe Boulton & Paul were considering submitting a proposal to satisfy the 1942 MoAP specification for a post-war transatlantic aeroplane. That specification was issued to the Bristol Aeroplane Company alone and eventually resulted in the Brittania. Both Miles and Short were interested in submitting designs to the specification but it was a “done deal” between the MoAP and Bristol. The Miles design was the X.11 project. Someone with far more knowledge than me about Boulton & Paul might be able to comment on this.
I know that it does not fit your description in terms of size, but perhaps what you had in mind, Old Shape, was the Armstrong Whitworth Apollo – a medium size four engine airliner first flown in 1949. However it was closer in size to original Viscount (not surprising as both were constructed to the Brabazon IIB specification). Judging from the most recent posts, that would seem to be the favourite theory. However if you look at the tail of the Apollo, I’m not sure if it is fair to say that it was prettier than the Viscount!
Thanks for replies all.
No, it wasn’t the Apollo I was thinking of. In the mid 60’s, I had the “Observers book of Aircraft” and there was a picture in there. I remember it only because it was an unusual manufacturers name, not one of the common ones. I always swore it was Boulton Paul. I am now thinking it was French.
Size, I also remember it was up there with the Brit.
I’m allowed off days. Brain is full. New things come along, old things drop out.
Are those the biggest blades in business today? Look awesome!
Looks like they rotate in opposite direcetion on each wing. Does that improve the way the play flies even if if has to fly on just 2 engines on a single wing? Is this common?
Yes, biggest blades. 2nd Biggest turboprop engine ever….The Bear is #1.
Contra rotating props, don’t think that has been done before, not on seperate engines. The twin props on same spindle (Shack/Bear etc.) had contra’s.
Sir Jed, or even Lord Jed as I hope one day it will be is the only presenter on TV that is prepared to speak his mind. For that alone, the programme (And his books / columns etc. should roll on).
Not only TG, but his other documentaries have been outstanding…….
The one about his father in law, the VC winner from the Isle of Man. Fantastic viewing.
The Izzy Kingdom Brunel justification of Greatest Britain. Fascinating.
And, wasn’t it JC that did the doc. on the greatest ever raid? The ramming of the ship into the dry dock in France in WW2.
JC loves Britain and the British, loves petrol and power. We EXPECT him to deliver and he does.
If he mentioned a two year battery life (I can’t remember) it was probably delivered with the usual JC tongue-in-cheek, exaggerating to make a valid point. Probably like the claim that older Prius’s have done 250k on original battery. I assume it means kliks not Miles, that’s still 156k miles. Since 1997????? 15k miles a year for 10 years solid, in a roller skate. A correctly built car cannot withstand that sort of useage.
Nobody has mentioned about JC’s comment about the Korean designer “Choking on the Spanial in his sandwich”. I’m surprised the PC brigade jokers haven’t made a noise like a pig giving birth to a broken bottle on that one. But, they are silent, keeping their ill informed and mis educated feelings to themselves.
I find the programme entertaining, educational and true “Boys own”.
It sells worldwide and gains a large income for the BBC too.
As said above, I will never own those cars……..if I won the lottery 2 weeks running I’d still prefer an old BMW 7 series (New ones are butt ugly) with all the toys……….so it’s nice to see them being thrashed around a track by skilful drivers. Formula 1 racing is boring in comparison.
The Su47 vid on the same page is also good.
Re the topic…..I imagine the hot thin air of OZ contributed to the machine needing all but the last 10mm of runway?
Also, has anybody seen the C5 Galaxy refueling 10 mins after take off? Very clever. A large jet uses up to 20% of its fuel on it’s take-off and initial climb. So, fill up with 20% too little fuel, use that weight for real goods (Therefore maintaining MTOW) and then refuel once airborne. Does carrying 20% more cargo affect the landing characteristics etc. I imagine it must do??

Sic transit gloria mundi….. 😎
Not even this Forum was around for that original posting!
Are you suggesting that a ruler would ravish the land and then leave it bare?
Perish the thought. Where’s that oil……
When GB ran stuff, all we took was herbs and other foodstuffs. Look at HP sauce, ingredients come from all 4 corners of the Empire.
And Cotton.
And eveything else we could sell.
OK, we ruled with a dash of tyrany. But we didn’t leave them with the handicap of speaking French.
Coat, door, gone. 🙂
Merkins are presently trying to rule the world, the nations under its grip would probably rather have the Brits or French. Or even their own…..but then you get a Muggabe or an Amin every now and then.
It will never be resolved, that’s why a lot of us on here have longish careers in the Defence lark.
