Thanks for that link, it was interesting. I hadn’t realised they’d got as far as building and testing the BS.100.
I’ll have to refer to a couple of books for more detail but it was basically a supersonic development of the P1127. The artists impressions looked very nice. Very similar to the P1127/Kestrel/Harrier but longer which improved the looks. The engine was the BS.100 which, had it been built, was a derivative of the Pegasus using plenum chamber burning. I believe that involved burning fuel at the front of the engine so the front nozzles were hot as well as the rear.
Further details can follow if nobody else does it first.
The XIX would have been in service certainly during the last year or so of the war, and onwards til the mid 50s with THUM and in the far east…
One of the books I referred to said “soon after the war”.

Mark, the last mark of Spitfire, as opposed to Seafire, was the Mk.24.
A brief glance at a couple of books suggests that the F.21 flew 154 combat missions before the end of the war. The F.22 would therefore seem to be the first post-war Spitfire but apparently the FR.XVIII and PR.XIX were also post-war.
I’m sure there are several people around that will answer more accurately without even having to look it up. 🙂
I believe the biggest problem with the Stirling was the Air Ministry’s insistence that the span be less than 100′ so it would fit in a standard hangar. I seem to recall reading that it was also built like the proverbial brick outbuilding. Basically not enough wing.
The article says it’s a Merlin III so presumably it must be.

I read once that the increase in weight between the first and last Spitfires was the equivalent of a Mk.I taking off complete with 32 airline passengers and their luggage!

I’m going on memory too so I can’t be certain either.
IIRC, it was easy to make them round but until they used centrifugal castings they distorted in use.
They were reputed to have all been made just down the road from me in Chesterfield but the chap that told me is dead now so I can’t even confirm that. 🙂
I believe it was the centrifugal casting, rather than the grinding, that was the secret Bristol wouldn’t reveal.
I’ve certainly read they were told to let Napier in on the technology but I wouldn’t know now in which book to check any details.

The difference in that nose leg (?) is staggering. Is it really the same leg? Superb.
Early Vulcans had them as well.
Only the first prototype, amongst various other engines, and one B.Mk1.
Discounting the external test engines for TSR2 and Concorde, Vulcans flew with Avons, Sapphires, Conways, Olympii and one even had 2 Conways and 2 Speys. Quite a range.

Interesting to hear Sir Frederick Handley Page described as the designer of the Victor. I bet that came as news to the H-P drawing office. 🙂
