Disconcerting – an FB VI with 2-stage Merlins. The pictures aren’t very clear but it looks like they changed the bulged bomb doors at the same time.

    Beer

I rest my case, although Steve came close.

Steve, have you been permanently convinced as to the benefits of decent ale?

    How about the XJR 13?

    Pedantic mode on – XJ13
    Pedantic mode off.

You beat me to it John. Quite simply the most beautiful car ever built.

I’ve always had a soft spot for the late 60s/early 70s Lola T70 Mk III GT.

Kermit’s Mossie was sold for relative peanuts. I know it was 20 years or so ago but it was either £50,000 or £100,000, I can never remember which. A ludicrous figure now for an airworthy Mosquito. Nobody in this country was interested, just like the Sunderland.
At the same auction, the Hurricane, sadly no more, was sold to Canada for £250,000.
It seemed a lot at the time.

I’m not sure, different ones keep springing to mind but it’s bound to start with DH. 🙂

    Yeah yeah, very funny.

That is the book that has paid for most of it!

Looks like I’ve conributed to Melv’s Rearwin, although I’ve had my copy for about 10 years. Is that too long ago?

I think that’s slightly more extreme than my last plan.
We were burgled a couple of years back and I wanted to inroduce their faces to every square inch of our pebble-dash, since they liked our house so much.

If you are passing Popham . . .

Wish I was, especially as I’ve never seen the beast but it’s a hell of a long way from here. Hope it goes well.

Re the car problems, as I’ve said before I’m not a violent man, in fact so laid back I’m almost horizontal, but there are times I’m prepared to make an exception…

    Great job, Melv.

When it flies for the first time you’ll think it was nearly all worth it.

    Superb pictures.

I know you’re not supposed to speak ill of the departed, but the Hurricane’s a bit shiny – well a lot shiny actually.

    Interested to hear that, Andrew.
I’ve been meaning to go for years, especially when they’ve got one of their special offer weekends on or a second-hand day. No excuses really, it’s under an hour from here.

Robert Humm in Stamford’s quite good, in fact I’ll be in there in about 10 hours.
    Next to the railway station.

Doesn’t compare to Motorbooks, I can’t afford to go in there. 🙁

Not too many cameras around in wartime, or long lenses, but Geoffrey de Havilland Jr.’s party trick was upward rolls on one engine in a Mossie.
    Impressed the powers-that-be no end.

There’s a picture of a nuclear turbine in Bill Gunston’s Encyclopedia of Aircraft Engines.
It looks like two side-by-side jet engines with a lump, presumably the reactor, between them.
I’ve looked at the picture and read the brief description several times but it still hasn’t sunk in. I’ll have another look and see if I can understand it.
