My parents are, or in Dad’s case were, the same sort of age as Kev’s Dad. Both families lived in Watford, where I was born in 1952.
Considering how close Watford is to London, it seems to have got off relatively lightly. Like Steve, the house at the bottom of my Dad’s garden was destroyed, I think by a bomb although it sounds a bit odd if it was just one. Half a mile or so down the road was the worst incident in Watford during the war. A V1 came down in Sandringham Road and apparently careered along the road before exploding. The street was virtually destroyed and a lot of people were killed. A mile the other way Leavesden was turning out Halifaxes and Mosquitos.
There were 3 bomb craters in a park a few minutes walk from the house that I remember seeing well into the 60s.
Both Mum and Dad said one of their clearest memories was the sky going dark with aircraft for the Airborne attack on Arnhem.

I thought the Flypast article inferred they were virtually identical. Wasn’t it that the RAAF had previous Supermarine Seagulls so they just gave it another number but the RAF hadn’t had any before.
I’ve got the Putnam Supermarine book. I’ll look later and see if it’s explained any differently.

The prototype Seagull V was also the prototype Walrus. Can’t get much more identical than that!
There are slight dimensional discrepancies listed which seem unlikely, possibly transcription errors.
The only real difference was the model of Pegasus fitted. Seagull V had 625hp and the Walrus 750hp.
The Walrus was originally ordered as the Seagull for the RAF but it was amended before deliveries began.

Captain Eric ‘Winkle’ Brown CBE.DSC.AFC.RN has made 2407 carrier deck landings, 2,721 catapult launches and flown 487 different types of aircraft. These are all world records.
He served in the Fleet Air Arm in WW2 and was on board HMS Audacity when it was sunk.
He was based at Farnborough as a test pilot for 6 years from 1942 and has a list of decorations as long as your arm, and longer than his. I think his words are ‘diminutive stature’.
He was the first person to land a twin-engined aircraft (Mosquito) and the first to land a jet (Vampire) on an aircraft carrier.

I thought that too but as I’m not a pilot and can never remember which way the effect works, or work it out, I thought it was brain failure on my part.
Ungeared engines came first. At that time propellor rotation was the same as crankshaft. Look at a Cirrus, Gypsy etc.
The propellor rotates the opposite way to a Merlin. The Merlin and British radials all have conventional rotation at the crankshaft.
American ungeared engines rotate backwards – Harvard, Beaver…
I base my comments (forwards/backwards) on the tens of millions of car engines that have been built in the last century, the convention is clockwise at the front of the crankshaft.

As Mark12 said, we should be talking about crankshaft rotation.
The Griffon runs backwards.
Strangely, the ‘R’ apears to have conventional rotation (can’t find a picture of a Buzzard) so it was obviously a conscious decision to reverse the Griffon.
Just had a glance at Bill Gunston’s Encyclopaedia of Aero Engines.
Looks like the Sabre had epicyclic reduction too.
Speaking as a left-handed person, we’ll have less of this sinister.
The Merlin 131 was the one with the idler gear.
The Merlin runs the right way, ie clockwise from the front, as the reduction gearing has reversed the rotation.
Generally speaking, that’s the way infernal combustion engines are expected to run. Whether that’s just a European idea I don’t know.
American aircraft engines appear to run backwards.
Radial engines have epicyclic reduction gears (as opposed to spur) which don’t reverse rotation. I’m on slightly dodgy ground here as I can never remember how an epicyclic box works. I used to ask my Dad once a year or so and understand it for about a week, hence the annual request. Unfortunately, as he died 17 years ago, I’ve comprehensively forgotten this time.

I think I read once that RR were hoping to sell Griffons to the Yanks and that’s why they run backwards. Seems a strange idea and I haven’t a clue where I saw it.
