My French is of the long forgotten schoolboy variety, but haven’t they got the ceiling a bit wrong?
By my calculations, 11,000m is about 36,000ft. Surely the Lightning’s ceiling was more like 60,000ft.
Did it vary from mark to mark?
I think I recall reading that Hanna Reitsch (spelling?) flew the first one. Unrepentant Nazi but brilliant pilot apparently.
Thanks, guys.
Discounting how they got into the situation in the first place, it was certainly a great feat of airmanship. I know sim training is supposed to cover all eventualities but I suspect no engines isn’t on the curriculum.
Rather convenient that the Azores are where they are too. “We’ve got two chances – slim and none”.
With the re-jigged forum, are the old messages still accessible?
They said the car parks were full so the verges for miles around were full as well. we managed to park near the gate and walk in.
Trundle is exactly the right word. Not much runway left. Nice to see and hear a live Vulcan though. Looked good considering it lives outside.
They did say the Jaguar was going to be a flypast so I suppose we can’t really complain about low, fast and gone.
Glad to see the Sea Vixen was fixed quickly.
Alastair, it serves you right for driving a Volvo, they obviously need lorry tyres.:)
I now use Colway remoulds and won’t use anything else. 150 mph rated and the best tyres I’ve ever used.

No need to apologise, SE5Afan, it gives the thread legs.
Nice tale about DP845 in Jeffrey Quill’s Spitfire – a Test Pilot’s Story.
He was summoned to Farnborough with a Spit to take part in a race with an Fw190 and a Typhoon, his job being to come last.
He took DP845, the Fw190 went bang and he comfortably beat the Typhoon.
Consternation in high places.
Ross
Seriously impressed!
I would have said it was due south but I’ve just been to look at a map and it’s spot-on south east.
No wonder I don’t remember it, there was 2.1/2 months to go to my second birthday.
If memory serves me right, 231 OCU was Bassingbourn so I guessed that right.
Thanks
Ken
I lied – third birthday. Apparently you lose the ability to count as you get older.

I use prompt as occasionally you can’t get in to a site without Java.

Rant away, I’ll join you.
Freeserve Anytime no real problems. For some strange reason, usually disconnects after a couple of minutes, reconnects and is then OK.
Broadband should be available around here in a week or so. Time to interview ISPs. I’m not paying £28, I’m a cheapskate.
Speed humps. Loads of ’em round here. Just filled one road with them. A retired cop that has lived near it for nearly 40 years can’t remember the last time there was an accident on it. Send the bill to the council. If the speed limit is 30, we’re entitled to drive at 30. They must be illegal. All we need is a legal eagle to prove it.
I used to think Hertfordshire had the worst roads in the country, now I’m pretty sure it’s Derbyshire. They say they can’t afford to repair them but they can afford speed humps.
Our local Tesco’s not too bad for running out of stock but Morrisons is terrible. At the moment they’ve got it in for us as they’re discontinuing everything we buy. I’m convinced it’s deliberate. Agree with Kev about shelf fillers and trolleys. They abandon them anywhere.
Strange how the spotty yoofs can’t tell which is the front of a baseball cap too. You’d think the peak was a bit of a clue.
I rant a lot these days. Moira says I’m getting grumpier as I get older. Good. As I plan on getting a fair bit older yet there’s more to come.

Sounds good to me.
I’ll try and con some friends into putting me up overnight on the Saturday. Bassingbourn’s a lot nearer than Chesterfield!
Thanks for that link, Lancman.
The secretary of my model flying club is a retired Squadron Leader and has the AFC.
At least I now know when he got it, if not why.
Not the sort of thing you can ask, really.

Good link, could be there for days.
(Feel quite smug, realised where they got the site name from in a minute or so)
