“Wooden Wonders to Whisper Jets” is wonderful. Affectionate tribute to DH and the time flies by. It’s too short.

I’d like to think it’s true, but like Robbo, I won’t hold my breath.

I’ve heard that if the CAA are approached in the right way, they’re very helpful, they just don’t like being taken for granted.
Scenario 1. “We’ve restored this and we want to fly it.”
Response – Bums rush.
Scenario 2. “We want to restore this and fly it, what have we got to do?”
Response – Give us some details and we’ll have a look.

I understand another reason for not flying a Lightning is also control related.
They have a propensity to catch fire and all the control rods run down the central fuselage spine, through nylon, or similar, guides.
Even if the fire is extinguished, the guides then lock onto the rods as they cool down. Heard this from ex-RAF airframe fitter so no reason to doubt it.

I really hope I’m not cracking up.
There were a couple of fighters on the embankment, presumably Spit and Hurri, and I think some more aircraft somewhere else but I can’t remember now. The fighters I know I saw, big grass area in front of huge building. Next time I’m in the Smoke I’ll look and see where that was. Got a mental “snapshot” of that. The Beau I’ve seen pictures of in Horseguards just after the war. I hadn’t appeared then. However, my “snapshot” is different to the ones usually published. It would be RD867.
It was a family day out with parents and sister but it’s got to be 35 years ago. Whether we went into London to see them or it was coincidence I don’t know. Could have been trip out for my or my sister’s birthday which are March and October. Dad no longer with us but I’ll see if Mum remembers anything. 50th anniversary of the RAF?
Anybody got Flight or Aeroplane from 1968? Presumably it would be reported in one or both of them.

Like most people, I assume, I knew of the BAPC but it was just a name and I really didn’t know much more so the explanation is good.
It appears there really is a need for a body, somebody, anything with a little more clout to ensure that important airframes, and sites, aren’t lost forever. Mustn’t degenerate into “preserve everything at all costs” but we certainly seem to need more than we currently have.
I’m full of bright ideas but how it could work I don’t know. It just seems silly that a council can stop you chopping a tree down or demolishing a wall, and make you repair said wall, and we/they can’t do anything about a different sort of heritage.
Presumably there’s a government Ministry for Heritage, even if it’s buried in something else. Every government MP appears to be a minister of something or other so there must be one for us!

My own political views are certainly right of centre, and strangely, seem to be getting more so as I get older. However, I’ve always thought that theoretical communism was a brilliant idea. I concluded many years ago that it simply couldn’t work in practice.
