There was a discussion on here a while ago about a mix of three and four bladed props on Halifaxes due to resonance, and I’m pretty sure Mosquitos had to be reduced by an inch or two from the original fitment for the same reason.

I should have realised the Macchi would be fixed pitch, like the contemporary Supermarine. They would pre-date VP props, and given the problems the super coarse pitch gave, if VP were available they would have been used.

That’s not overcome, quite the opposite. Small usable rev range, compensate with many gears. The newer generation of car diesels are a far cry from only 20 years ago in terms of drivability.

    Sorry, OT.

I have a feeling that one of the (several) reasons Rover gave up with gas turbines for cars was they perform best at constant speed, which is impractical on roads.

Having said that, so do diesels but that’s being overcome.

Probably the reasons the larger high-power radials didn’t use or need it was because, latterly, these were mostly found on multi-engined installations e.g. bombers and airliners, which had greater ground clearance for a single, larger (and less costly and complex) slower-turning propeller.

    Anon.

That was the only thought I could come up with too.

I don’t know about the Macchi, but if the Gannet’s props changed pitch together, there must be a clever linkage, as I believe they could be feathered individually.

    As above for advantages etc.
One of the earliest applications that I can think of would surely be those Schneider Trophy Macchi Seaplanes in the early 1930s?

I’m not sure that counts, they were counter-rotating and each driven by a different engine, like the Gannet.

DH two-speed, converted to constant speed in the field. I believe that was most, but I don’t know if it was all of them.

Not relevant to the thread really but as G-ORDY has mentioned the Southampton I’d like to add it.

Several years ago I visited Hendon, only very briefly, accompanied by Doug, an extremely cantankerous ex-RAF engine fitter. When he saw the Southampton he said, “that’s not an aeroplane, it’s a piece of furniture!”
    I agree it’s superb workmanship.

We intended to return another time for a proper visit but sadly Doug died before we got around to it.

Ask Newark. AFAIK they still run theirs occasionally.

With virtually all UK production Hurricanes being built somewhere nominally to the west of London, Scotland would seem a pretty inconvenient place to make wings for them. A CRO would make more sense.

My comments as an extremely out of practice guitarist, and terrible when I was playing…

I would never knock Ringo, or Charlie who hasn’t been mentioned. They were/are perfect for the job they’re required to do. I never got Moon and still don’t, to me the Ox did the drummer’s job in the Who. Cream I thought were the dog’s danglies, Cozy I thought was very good but it’s got to be Bonzo.

Possibly reinforced by just having seen Led Zep on Sky Arts, recorded around the time of their first album which is the only time I saw them live.

    Sh1t I’m getting old.

An excellent Legends by any standards and considering the TFC fleet were holed up in their hangar, even more impressive. The FW190 was a highlight as others have said but there was plenty more of interest too.

I can usually put up with M. Chabbert apart from the occasional irritation but on Saturday he never seemed to shut up for a second. Even t’other half who loves his accent said he did go on a bit. It probably didn’t help that we were sat in the FoD enclosure right in front of a speaker so it was loud too.

I see nothing new in that financial report…

Probably because the newspaper report is dated January 5th.

    Digging and stirring IMO.
