If BEA hadn’t insisted on DH redesigning the Trident, the Medway would probably have been approaching production status at around the time the FAW.2 was being developed. The most powerful dry Spey hadn’t got much more grunt than the 11,250 lbs of the Avon 208s used in the FAW.2. The Medway was supposed to start at approaching 14,000 lbs.
Opposite rotating props. Not with an idler gear, the whole engine rotated in the opposite direction. Rolls-Royce never did that again – it seems it wasn’t one of their better ideas.

The tail surfaces were all slab type. The horizontal surfaces controlled the aircraft in roll and pitch and were called tailerons. When the flaps were lowered they shielded the tail sufaces requiring too much taileron deflection so the “elevators” were unlocked deflecting upwards only to trim the aircraft in pitch.
The flaps were blown, which I had known but forgotten. The book appears to be saying only the inboard section was blown which may explain the apparent split. There’s a small photograph on the same page showing XR220 at Cosford with the flaps slightly lowered and, if they are in two parts, they’ve both moved the same amount.
As several have already said, Davidstow Moor is largely untouched. It’s too far away from everywhere for it to be worth collecting hardcore and the ground is so poor it’s only marginally better than the runways anyway.
Strangely, three Formula 1 (-ish) races were run there around 1950. Bernie reckons Silverstone is bad to get to…

The BMFA are still the SMAE. BMFA was thought to be more accessible for day-to-day use but I think it sounds a lot less important than the Society of Model Aeronautical Engineers.

I find it hard to believe Packard engines were AF as opposed to BSW/BSF when they’d gone to all the trouble of making British taps and dies.
I’ve heard before that the Packard toolkit was extremely comprehensive and of superb quality compared to what came with a Rolls-Royce engine.
