I quite accept that we enthusiasts probably spend less than Joe Public, not least because we object to being taken to the cleaners on a regular basis, rather than once a year for a “special day out”.
Hendon started off entirely hangars. The additions I’ve seen (I haven’t visited for 3 years or so) are also basically hangars. Apart from being dark because they won’t turn the lights on, they’re perfectly suitable for displaying aircraft.
The AAM does not by any criteria display the contents well. It looks like the outline was drawn around the B.52 and everything else crammed in around (and over) it. The natural daylight is an excellent idea, but in my view, poorly executed for a building to keep large aircraft in. The glass wall was taken down and rebuilt, at a cost of £100,000 each time IIRC.
Cost less to build than an average home?
Six large detached houses have just been crammed onto a very small plot opposite my house. They are selling for around £200,000 each. Presumably the builder is making a substantial profit so why was 6 or 8(?) million needed for the AAM?
My mum (80 in May) is presumably a “general visitor”. She thought the AAM was awful.
“Sheds” are relatively cheap. Use the money saved to install state of the art insulation and humidity control.
Cosfords original design had the roof completely covered in solar panels, to produce more electricity than the museum used, so running costs could be minimal. It had a large, versatile, open area to give maximum flexibility with displays. Instead we have what to me is an eyesore with two triangles. There are strange angles in the building which I assume are more expensive to build, or is this a recently discovered stroke of genius that nobody else has seen before.
I hadn’t heard the term “willy waving” before but it fits the bill, whether it’s the architect or the people that finally decide.

Interesting description for an engine that overheated, failed in flight and didn’t produce it’s specified power at altitude.
The Merlin I was a failure too but that had to be fixed, too many aircraft were depending on it.
With the RR workload at that time on Merlins, Vultures and the beginnings of the Griffon, they were never going to be able to spend much time on an engine for a single aircraft type.

As far as I can think without consulting books, the Typhoon was only Camm’s second monoplane design. The other designs around at the same time, Hotspur, Henley, etc. IIRC all used versions of the Hurricane wing. A degree of conservatism would seem likely, and sensible.
Is it possible they just used the cowlings from the power egg? They would seem unneccessarily large for carb intake and intercooler, but they could well have been to hand.
I’m fairly confident I read somewhere the Typhoon wing was thick to give high lift. With it being a much heavier fighter than anything Hawker had done before, and aerodynamics being less advanced than now, it seemed to make sense.
I think Sydney Camm wanted to put the radiator in the wing root from the very beginning, but there was a suspicion that this would be vulnerable (not sure to what – gunfire perhaps, but also maybe plumbing issues). He also designed a version of the Tempest (the Mk1 I think) with this layout, and of course the radial engined versions all had the radiator in the wing root as did the Sea Fury.
When Fairey were looking at ways to improve the performance of the Firefly they came upon this method, which improved speed by 30-40mph. Yet for some reason the powers that be remained wedded to the chin radiator for some time to come.
Radial engines don’t have radiators, they’re air-cooled. Do they have oil-coolers?
I tried Googling yesterday, with no success, trying to find out something I may have read – or made up, about the odd-looking Merlin installation on the Mustang.
IIRC, the Merlin power-egg was developed at Hucknall. If you’re experimenting with fitting a Merlin to a strange airframe, it would make sense to use what you’ve already got for test purposes. If it works, work out how to do it properly later…

I can’t help with identifying what it is but both the Spitfire and Lysander pictures are of the prototypes, both of which first flew in 1936. IIRC, the Spitfire entered squadron service in 1938 so 1937 for the book seems likely.
Would it be fair to say that the Ghost was about on a par with the RR Nene, in terms of performance and the level of technology?
I haven’t anything to hand to confirm it but that sounds about right.
The Ghost was an improved Goblin and the Nene was an improved Derwent so they were both designed using experience gained from their predecessors, in the case of the Nene on a tablecloth IIRC.
That’s apart from the Derwent 5 which was a Nene scaled down to fit a Meteor nacelle.

The quick fix was to up the number of the new Yankee imported gun to a suitable calculated weight of fire that would do the job – wasn’t it Freeman who worked it out.

After a quick Google, later Canadian Sabres were powered by Orenda engines but they were Canadian, not British.
