I’m sure I read somewhere that during a test flight TSR2 applied reheat to one engine only and the Lighting chase aircraft couldn’t keep up even with full burners!

I’m pretty sure that’s on Damien’s site, as linked earlier.

I don’t know the area at all, I’ve been to the Wirral once and that’s the nearest. It seems these were more to the Welsh side which is unfortunate. It seems the Dee silted up, in a big way, in living memory. There’s a small town called Parkgate (and a couple of others, I believe) which until the sixties was a seaside resort – it’s now around a mile inland!
Easier than diving if there are any that side.

I’m still impressed by his ‘thirty bob’ Chinese tailor and what he can do with old aprons.

You’d think a self-made man would have avoided being taken to the cleaners by that tailor. πŸ™‚

    Good luck at Reno Steve.

    Hi
As I have only been following Aviation for 30 plus years I have NEVER heard of Steve Young ??
Could some kind person please enlighten me as to who he was ?? and please excuse me for my ignorance in this matter

As Ian and Ian (?) have already sort of said – he was our friend.

That was one of the major problems, the leg had to rotate through 180ΒΊ before retracting. XR220 and on had an extra drag-link (wrong description I’m sure but best I can think of offhand) to try to permanently cure the problem.

I’ve got “The Stirling Story” or similar around somewhere. Michael Bowyer I think.

    Googled and found this:

    Substantially over a tenner!

Mike Lithgow went to Libya for the short-lived Swift record (“for that very reason”).

John, it was a couple of years ago. He had an overwhelming desire to hit anybody rich, just because they were rich.
Strange people you have over there.

I’ve never got involved with the infighting here and I’m not going to start now.

However, I would be interested to know if the other mods have ever felt it necessary to ban somebody immediately.
The only ones I can recall are from when there was only Webbie, with the Australian thug and the idiot who thought it was funny to keep going on about lamp-posts.

Ian, you should be ashamed of yourself. Pick on somebody your own size.

BTW, why was there a Mafia representative at Steve’s funeral?

There’s a difference between specialist and raw materials. I spent many years selling (commercial) aluminium alloys. It’s a long time ago now but I’m fairly confident all our aircraft alloy mills had ceased production by the early 80’s.

WP921/G-ATJJ minus a few bits & bobs at Brooklands last Sunday (31st July). I gave the spinner a fondle in Steve’s memory.

    Geoff.

I thought the last time I saw that pic, they’re either going to have to use a very small multi-bladed prop, or extend that undercarriage.

Yes. We would also have been able to build aircraft without having to import most of the specialised materials we do now.

Export orders would have been very likely from Australia if Mountbatten hadn’t stuck his oar in, the Luftwaffe were interested. Others I don’t know.

There is no denying the figures the RAF requested were plucked out of thin air with no idea of how feasible they were. The management was ludicrous and largely politically driven. The design wasn’t far removed from the original English Electric layout but some idiot behind a desk gave Vickers the design lead.

By the time of cancellation the severe technical difficulties had been largely overcome, including the extremely advanced terrain following radar, I believe most of the RAF requirements had been met and IT WORKED, despite all the built-in likelihood of it failing.

From your previous posts I gather you never approved of TSR.2 and are pleased it was cancelled. Why?
