    Tom,

You probably recognize this as you would have passed in on your way
    towards the cockpit.

Yet again the UK goverment and its transient glove puppets are out to tar all with a single brush.

While I don’t have any de-activated guns (or live ones for that matter) I can see this idea causing a lot of trouble.

We carry out licenced excavation (under the Protection of Military Remains Act) and often find guns in varying states of dis-repair from almost perfectly straight to banana like 20mm cannons. At present we have to declare them to the local police and then have them deactivated. This included welding a rod into the barrel and also welding the breach. I would like to know how you go about reactivating that as the distortion caused by heat from a welding torch is enough to mean it could never be fully cleared of weld and damaged steel.

But then we can trust our elect representatives to make a mess of everything.

Don’t worry Alan, in The Netherlands it’s the same situation. Even if you find one corroded and banashaped machinegun, it’s illegal. The only way you could hurt yourself or others with it is when you accidentally drop it on your toes, but nevertheless.

She looks great, good job well done. Did you know that there is one part that is fitted in both the Halifax and Victor. One small bungee cord is exactly the same in both types.

    My two cents

I think the RAF Museum did a great thing by restoring their Tempest in the target towing livery that it wore during it’s active service instead of painting it as an ordinary wartime Tempest (as it was for many years on display). Not many people agree on that one but someone took the trouble to think about it as it should. Well done.

I would have BAe build me a new Halifax airframe to toy with.

Perhaps that is why only one FW has left the ground so far. Let’s see what the future brings. Fingers crossed.
Suppose we are 200 years into the future and a major historic avaiation museum sturggles to keep their exhibits in good shape, the balance between original and replica would shift don’t you agree?

    Hmm yes,

We can all have an opinion but we are not paying the (substantial) bills to restore these magnificent aircraft. As has been said before (and will be said again) this has been done to death. Get more aircraft restored to fly or static (doesn’t matter for me, I like them both) and enjoy them. Having read the Haynes Spitfire book I have even more respect for those who are willing to invest large amounts of money for their dreams. Good on you chaps!

The new year has started out great for the project.

This is the engine control box through which the push pull rods go towards the wings from the throttle box. On top of that the fairing which protects similar rods from the fuel cocks. This whole assembly fits on the back of the pilot’s bulkhead, which incidentally is the next (in this case) major project.

I was afraid about that, otherwise it wouldn’t be asked as swap items I reckon.

    Thanks

    Hi Tom,

Thanks for the valuable information you provide. This gives another view in the often one-sided opinions in books that most people take for granted and that are repeated over and over again.
Any story you wish to tell on this forum, feel free.

    Phil,

Your information is quite old I see.;)
Ian has been married to Jill for a number of years now, and it was indeed at Elvington (spot the Halifax connection). For a period of time he was heavily involved into re-enactment as part of a bomber crew during airshows and displays but that frustrated him more than gave pleasure. 57Rescue is sleeping as far as I know and Ian took a sabattical from the historic aviation scene and sadly sold his Halifax instrument panel on e-bay a few years ago. Last time I spoke to him he was getting back into the scene again but haven’t heard from him in months.

    Hi Tom,

Well, reason for my interest in the Halifax is that I am building a cockpitsection from scratch (see pics below) and I have a thing for all things HP built with the Halifax particular. I know the Halifax was very robust but in general Joe Public knows only about the Lancaster and Spitfire but other aircraft types are generally ignored or suffer from incorrect “myths”. The best information is from the “horse’s mouth” (you in this case ahum).

Can you tell us something about your training (did you fly Whitleys for instance) you opinion about the tailproblems the Halifax suffered in the early versions, performance and was there a sort of competition between Lancaster (you know, the Daily Mirror bomber) and Halifax crews?

Thanks for any insight you can give us to broaden our knowledge.

    Cheers

    Hi Tom,

Welcome to the forum, I fully agree with Bruce, but then again I am biased regarding the Halifax.

Do you have any stories, anecdotes etc. about your life with the Halifax and perhaps can clear some “myths” about the Halifax.

    Cheers
