Firstly, apologies Tangmere1940, work and a young family have meant I’ve been unable to get to the computer much recently – it is certainly not my intent to appear rude or ungrateful. Sorry if this appeared to be the case.
Thank you for the information. It is fascinating how much knowledge there is on all these incidents. I wish I could say my interest was deeper, but the crash site is fairly local to where I grew up, and I have an interest in the lesser recognised variants of the Spitfire such as the VI and VII.
The report made me wonder about the circumstances of the incident, and one thought was if some of the development may recover parts of one the aircraft, that maybe could have been used as a local memorial.
Thanks again.
actuallky, the nacelles are part of engine design, so it’s still RR to blame…
incorrect, most nacelles are designed by other companies than the engine manufactures. Aircelle design and manufacture the A380 nacelles.
And as always, until the causes of the incident are know, people should refrain from speculation.
Any further news on the progress on the restoration to flight of this Spitfire?
Thanks
How about John Travolta’s?

How about Glacier Girl – 270 feet below the ice.

Good picture of the cockpit of EN474 here..
The Wright Flyer 1… 🙂
Hi, not anywhere near an expert on this, but one thing that occurred to me was if it is R6703, am I correct in thinking this was a Supermarine built Mk1, so the ‘ch-Aeroplane Factory’ dataplate fragment would be inconsitent for this aircraft? (it was pretty new when it was lost, so any rework or parts swaps would have been low I would have thought?)
A few Italians would also be nice, say:
CR42
Macchi 202
Macchi 205
Re 2005
Fiat G55….
I can think of a few aircraft MB293
Sorry to go off topic, but what’s the status of this one? Would be nice to see an early Seafire.
Is anybody able to confirm which marks of Spitfire had the PR canopy, a gunsight and external bulletproof windscreen? Was it just the PR1G and PRXIII? I’ve never seen a picture of one, but is it possible that a PR canopy was fitted to a standard MkV Spitfire?
Also, the picture seems to show a ‘U’ Squadron code. Did any of the PR Squadrons ever start with this letter?
Any help appreciated.
Thanks again.
Sean
WP515,
Where abouts are you based, and where is the exhibit?
thanks
Great map, really like it.
Just a though, but would Air Berlin fall into the low cost category?
May be worth contacting the Malta Aviation Museum – its a small island, so they will probably know most of the aircraft remains on it.
Here is a picture of some Mosquito remains on Malta:
