Exactly and that is what I don´t like. If first rate carriers like BA decide for commercial considerations instead of premium passanger safety, then that is a trend which I do not like. If I pay and fly with a major carrier I demand that passenger safety should be their first and only concern in case of a problem of the plane happening.

And the later fuel pump failure shows imho, that there can always be a second problem.

so, if a 747 should divert everytime an engine goes inop, why should we bother with 4 engines? Lets stick with 2 and have the same procedure.

The whole point of 4 engines is for long range ops and redundancy. The 747 is designed to fly with 3 engines at cruise alt. The 4th is only there for added safety and also for economics.

And I always thought that the 4 engines were there for flying routes with no useable diversion near by. And to continue flying wit h3 engines when a diversion would be riskier then to continue flying. For that reason the 747 is certified to fly on the engines, because otherwise it would have to land at a diversion airport.

Btw has such a thing ever happened to an A340, I would imagine that they could not safely fly on 3 engines.

Imho opnion they should ground all A300/310 worldwide as long as the reason is not known. Wasn´t there an AA flight with an A300 that crashed because of the same reasons ?

As much as I agree that the pilto had the right to make the judgement he did, I still think that it was not the best decision for passenger safety. The first engine failure happened in the US with lots of save and perfectly 744 capable airfields around and well before the plane entered the more “dangerous” part of the flight (if you want to call the North Atlantic dangerous). So mho it would have been safer to set the plane down while still over North America.

I can´t comment on the second case.

Brazil needs high-performance jets for one reason.. To maintain access to latest technology. It is not about leading the war, it is about joining the elite club and maintaining the progress. You cannot play the first league with refurbished F-5s and AMX, in fact it is a shame that such a large country worth 176 mil. citizens with a fairly well developed airspace industry cannot afford ridiculous number of 12 high-performance jets.

PhantomII, Brazil should revive the FX and buy the best they can get for the money, but certainly not the F/A-18C/D which are no longer even produced and cannot offer any significant technology Brazil does not have already. They need either the 35, 2000-9 or Eurocanards. IMHO.

And finally, Brazil will hardly buy American…

That is reasoning I never understood.
Barazil has bee involved in desgining the AMX, has done upgrades to its current fleet of fighters.
Brazil is capable to built some worldclass training aircraft and some very well performing airliners, so what should they learn from putting together 12 kits of fighter built in another country ?

On the other hand it would spent money on a fleet of aircraft with no operational use, that would become a pain in the ass logistical and maitnenance wise in a decade.

the meoney spent would be better spent on giving it to Embraer to widden there line of commercial aircraft and start competing with Boeing and Airbus in airliners market. There a some nice nices to be taken. (757 style modernised aircraft, A300-600 style aircraft…)

Dor the military a bigger purchase at a later date will be better.
