29 Sqn is the Typhoon OCU
17 Sqn is the Typhoon OEU

29 Sqn has no aircrafts yet, but the first pilots should have completed their training on the Typhoon already with 17 Sqn at Warton.

Now we found another use of that substance.

Look 10 years younger with “Pimple Power Extracts” 😀

Billy that is an absolute reasonable opinion. In fact a Coast Guard and a police force would not only be siffucent for Canada but also for many european states.

Yet I would want to have a force that can do air policing. Those planes are usefull if a civilian plane has an emergency and also usefull when some one wants to ceash a plane into a building. We had a mental sick person here in Germany that wanted to do this.

Well I would say they will at least keep some planes for air policing duties. After 9/11 the need for an interceptor force is absolutely positively proven.

The offensive element could however be an UACV.

The biggest problem for the MiG-29SMT is the long term support imho. Russia has stopped the upgrade programm and it is not certain that they will continue wit hthe programm.

Without the update programm the MiG-29 will be a prime target for fleet reductions in Russia.

Any customer buying the MiG-29SMT must be aware that he might beo operating the type along with India, Yemen and Algeria only in 2010. If they plan of a 30 years service life, that will mean some huge problems in the long run.

Mirage2ks and F-16s will be flown in larger numbers by more countries during that period, so you will always be able to jump on yet another update programm. You will also have a decent spare support.

Furthermore the MiG-29SMT is not thoroughly tested like the western competitors. Much of the stuff is pretty new and system intergration test and all those stuff is basic at best. Weapon testing has often be limited to some carriage tests and some launch simulations.

We have a russian trained force, so buying russian hardware would be cheap and prudent.

    – So for interception duties we would want a sizeable force of MiG-29 SMTs. Say 48 airframes (refurbished ones if possible and cheaper)

    – Then we would look at a SU-25 class aircraft. SU-25KM Scorpion should do. Say 24 of that type.

So my fast jet force would be limited to those 72 airframes.

    Helicopter force :

We want to be able to partol our borders at night and want to be combat capable. Also it would be nice to have a small number of infantry around to check out things on the ground.

    – That makes the Mil-24 the perfect choice. Obviously we want the to be night fighting capable like the upgrade russian versions.
    48 airframes should do

    – transport helicopter would be Mil-17s. Say 36 airframes

    – for utilitiy and light trransport we could get some used UH-1Hs form US army stocks. Say another 72 airframes.

    – for transport duties I would start with used AN-36 or AN-32. But retire them as soon as possible and replace them with CASA 235 and 295.

    – if the US would donate some used C-130s I would accept them as well

    ->
    – The rest of the money I would spent on trainig. That means at least 160 flying hours per year of every pilot.
    – Participating in PfP exercises.
    – Try to participate in Red Flag and Mapple Flag
    – Get some test time on the Polygone range
    – Do some missle test at Point Mugu

And pay all that with the budget of Norway ?? No way.

Buying all new built planes will mean that you will have to stretch the purchase over some years, meaning you will only achieve your normal strength after some years.

I would also try to get planes from two sources. Typhoon and Grippen are both strongly depending on the support of the brits. What will they do if the US does ask them not to supply your forces ??

I was also thinking about an ability to strike back at the enemy. You know you will loose in a conflict with Russia, but you must have the means to make it costly for them.

Because of that I want to add my ideas for a Navy and Army to the thread.

    Navy :

    – Emphasis on submarines with 8 U212A class types
    – addional some cheaper SSKs of say 8 U209s
    – Korvettes are also enough for your needs, as you would not leave the safety of your coastline in a major conflict. K130 class or the french desing with VL for SAMs.
    – Some FACs (used ?)

    Army :

    – a decent tank force to crush or at least contain a beach head. (say Leopard 2 or Leclerc – partly used)
    – many IFS with ATGMs as mobile ATGM teams (Bradley, Puma for example)
    – also wheeled IFVs
    – MLRS and PZH2000s for mobile fire support
    – land based hellfire systems on trucks to fight landing operations
    – lots of ATGMs (usefull against landing crafts)

    AA defense for the army:

    – Mistral manpads
    – Gepard AAA systems (used ones)
    – Roland SAM systems (used from Germany or France)
    – Roland 2 SAM systems (new built)
    – some US style HUMVEEs with Stingers
    – Improved HAWK (used)
