Iยดm not making the Cobra look better then it is/was.

Sure they suffered looses in Nam and they did only encounter few SA-7s. And they suffered heavily from the SA-7s, which was a rather new eapon during that time.

Many Hinds were lost in Afghanistan against a manpad equipped enemy, who nevertheless was not as good armed as the NVA was during Nam. (that is compared to the time)

The only conclusion I see is, that every attack helo will suffer losses if being used against a well equipped and capable enemy.

So yes, the Hind is better armored, yet the Cobra is harder to hit.

What I meant with “define nimble” is :

The Hind is faster. I believe it even tunrs better at high sppeds. But it can not fly nap of the earth nearly as good as the Cobra.

As Arthur said both helos are totally different concepts.

The Cobra is a mobile anti tank team, kind of extremely fast and mobile ATGM team.
The Hind is more something like an modern times IL-2.

Depending on your strategy on their use, both can be better.

Well Flex that can be discussed.

The AH-1 took quite some beatings during NAM and still flew on.
The Hind on the other Hand had problems with Manpads in Afghanistan.

Or to put it the other way, the Hind has more ammo, but is also the bigger target. ๐Ÿ˜€

    And define nimble plz.

    MAKO will never happen anyway.

The T-50 seems to an overkill for a trainer.

The YAK and the Machi seem very promising.

    The MiG is old style.

    Hawk is too expensive

L-159 good, but unpopular ( I wonder why)

K-8 – cheap but should do the job

Is CASA still making trainers btw ??

AFAIK some allied troops were using captured AK-47 and ammo during the actual fighting of OIF.

I tend to disagree on the usefullness of the Cobra for Pakistan.

Give it only a small village with some houses for cover or a few hills. It can stay hidden and behind friendly lines to engage enemy armor. It is a good highly mobile anti armour asset. Good if you need to brake an armored thrust as it can get to the action quicker then any other army asset.

If you lack LGBs and other precision guided weapons for use from your airplanes and use the helo in the described way, then it is still a valuable weapon.

Indian Hinds are less usefull. But not because the Hind is inferior or something, but because the airplanes of the IAF can do CAS with precision guided weapons. So the Hinds will also be used behind firendly lines. And I see a good role for them when it comes to protect supply lines and rear bases from guerillia type attacks.

The role the US Army sees for the AH-64 is dead. Cheaper and simpler attack helos are still usefull in the described roles.

I will try to find the exact story and past it.

    Not that again ….
