I don’t think the Mig29’s are going to happen, but their smoke would really startle the Greens and their voters.

No amount of Germanizing of Mig29’s will give German companies the kind of work that the Typhoon would provide.

    Best regards, Transall.

DonΒ΄t tell me, but our current government might think otherwise ..

And if you look at the rumored cuts for the other services, that will hurt.

Well, because before our current social democrat / green government came to power, those people wanted to buy MiG-29 instead of Typhoon. And it would be very cheao and might give some workt to german firms, when they would germanize the MiGs.

I think it would be hard to explain Rafale to the public, as it would not be cheaper then EF. So what they need is a cheap plane which would also bring some workt to the german industries and it should be not american. So the solution would be russian. SUs would be too big and too aggressive, so the MiG-29 SMT would be my guess.

And the reasoning would be, that each plane is about 30 Million Euros cheaper then the EF and that there is a good chance to market the german version to other Mig users worldwide, meaning even more work for german industries. Would sound good to the people voting those idiots, but would totally ignore the fact that most MiG-29 operators would never be ablte to get an arms deal with Germany because of our strict weapons export laws and those that could get such a contract have the capability to overhaul the planes themselves.

Well I would guess the following if EF dies.

    – Germany, either Rafale or more likely MiG-29 SMTs or SUs
    – Britain : american hardware, perhaos F-16 + F-22 ??
    – Italian : F-16s till JSF arrives
    – Spain : could be F-18 E/Fs (Rafale seems less likely)

Arthur if they want to buy european, then I would suggest Rafale. Typhoons future might not be very bright. πŸ˜€

Yes all those EF cuts are still rumors, but it is easy to see.

There is a numer of 80 EFs for the Luftwaffe irculating in forums very well informed about such things.

It looks like a deal has been made with british ho also want many aircraft less then the 232 they are getting.

Italy is leaning towards being more closely integrated with the US forces and is already a JSF partner. Rumors are saying that the US is offering them a very good deal on more F-16s + JSF later instead of the Typhoons.

Spain has not offically changed their position, but friends at EADS confirm that the US is offering F-18 E/Fs for very favourable conditions. Kind of a reward for Spains support during OIF.

I would not be surprised if the whole EF programm ist going to be less then 250 planes.

If that happens IΒ΄m hopping that the entire programm is terminated instead. It will become to expensive to continue investing money in that unloved aircraft. It will never mature into a real multi-role fighter with so many airframes around.

I hope the politicans see the light and drop this programm forever.

The spain thing is very much a rumor I heard from a friend in the industry. They seem to look at Rafale (seems like Dassault is offering a good price for the old Mirage F1s) and at the F-18 E/F which the US is willing to sell at very favourable conditions for the spanish support of OIF. EF is said be consiberably more expensive as both other solutions.

I would not bet on the idea of EF being fielded after some rumoes circulating in germany today.

If an article came out regarding the prowess of the EF2K (or any other plane), we should also discount it because EF2K is currently being marketed to Singapore?

If some one would claim an EF would beat an F-16 MLU 40:1 I would laugh. Silliest story ever.

Old story, the rumor has been posted more then once. Nearly impossible to confirm and especially with M2000 tendering for the brazilian fighter contract I would take it was more then a grain of salt.

I hope EADS will jump in with some good offers to join the EF project. Could be tempting to some governments and could mean more Typhoons. πŸ™‚ (I would also like some Danish Rafales instead)
