You do not have to invade a country to coerce it surely?. A Carrier is any countries conventional big stick.

The British armed forces are set up for small scale force intervention on its own or can take part in major warfare against other competent countries as part of an allied force.

Without the option to use ground forces a carrier is useless in most cases. It is a tool for a major conflict with another state. Rebels, terrorists and other irregular forces won´t care if there is a carrier sending F-35s to bomb targets.

What is the use of a carrier, if you can not land troops? There are plenty mission out there where Amphibs are useful, be it humanitarian, peace keeping or limited fighting. A aircraft carrier on the other hand is only useful to bomb other countries that have a shore line and where you do not have airbases to use nearby. But then what is the point of bombing if you can not land troops.

And making the second carrier the worlds largest helicopter carrier seems like a very strange idea as well.

I do understand the idea behind joint operations with the Americans, but I think that the Amphibs can do many missions without US support. The carries on the other hand…

An A330 can not land where an A400M can nor is it able to take-off where the A400M can, nor can you drive vehicles into the A330 without large ground lifts.

Because the warhead would be carried each day. Easier to have a loitering recce UAV and a striking cruise missile.

But then again stealth and LO are always relative. Most major warships have a huge amount of radar power. It is quationable that a LGB could be fired from outside engagement range of a warship.

TheSLUF was a great strike aircraft for its time. Too bad it was to expensive more many countries when new and not multi-role enouh when used.

But it surely had the best tiger scheme ever.

On topic. I believe they took the launcrails from the AIM-9L not the pylons.

    HI Seahawk,

do we know that there are any early Typhoons on the market?

Well I know that Germany, Italy and the UK would be willing to take Tranche 3b, if a buyer for the Tranche 1 planes is found.

are the Finns unhappy with their F-18 Hornets ? Their attrition rate is quite low, only 3 out of 65. And when those Hornets are gone, they won’t have any option but to go for the F-35. Surely PAK-FA is out of the question for the Finns.

Early Block Typhoons. Remember that the F-18s are primarily used in air desfense role. Something a Block 5 Tiffy would do nicely.

And when will Typhoon get an AESA? Before 2030?

Seahawk, can you explain your reasoning why you think so vis a vis the Typhoon?
    .

We had countless threads in which the superiority of Spectra and the radar have been laid out. In addition there are also the clear reports from the UAE which show how Rafale slaughtered the Tiffies.

I read all that here in the forums.

I do not know why we are discussing it again, but it is fact that from the European planes Rafale is the most capable and vastly superior to the NG and the Typhoon.

So it looks like Rafale will win in India and Brazil. Excellent choice for both countries.

All evidence I am aware of say:

Saeqeh are rebuld F-5s with a new tail, because Iran has no rights to licencse built the orignal F-5.

Apart from the tail assembly it is an F-5 wing, engine and fuselage. Although it seems that latest pics do show launch rails on the wing again.

lets put this to rest once and for all

    .
    .

Compared the to F-18s and the AV8 the F-35B is comparable or superior.
You cant really discuss totally doing away the STOVl types unless your discussing upending the tea table. That would mean getting rid of small carrier types entirely. and that’s a totally different discussion.

The new British carriers are anything but small though.
