    Yeah, new built A-10s is something I always thought about. Reomove the huge gun and add 2 27 Mauser 27mm instead. use the space for an internal targeting pod. Re-engine with modern bizjet engines.

    The problem for the MiG-23 ainly is that it needs to start with an height and speed advantage against the teen fighters. But the radar is not that good when looking down, while the teen fighters not only have better radars but they also enjoy a much better tactical situation for using the radar.

    Add that the MiG-23 does only have semi-active radar guided missiles it is very likely that even the best attack will end in a draw (at best) with the Flogger killing the F-16 just before the AIM-9 impacts.

    However the MiG-23 was never meant o beat teen fighters, it was meant to beat the F-4, which it is capable off. MiG-23 is not superior but given a Soviet air defence system to back it up it should be able to equal an F-4E in air combat.

    As already said the main difference were the pilots. The British Lightnings were the largest air-to-air only flying club in Western Germany at the time. All others (apart from US F-102 and later F-15As) had secondary ground attack roles to fulfil. The Lightning kockies did play air-to-air every day and bounced countless NATO fighters and fighter bombers around Gütersloh and as far South as the big dams in the Sauerland. That was Lightning country, the knew every twist and every hill. When the fight was WVR only they had another advantage. Due to the old radar they were used to fly low-level and loo-up for targets, so they usually avoided detection in the ground clutter and used their famous climb to climb up for a nice tail attack on the enemy.

    Where would you find so many Mk2k-9s ?

    The production line is closed. Not so many second hand examples around either.

    There are few L159B around, so its hard to judge them. In the end I think it not much different to the BAe Hawk in all practical points.

    Stealth is more useful for AG attacks, as an aircraft could do those without emitting any signals the enemy could pick up. The F-117 is the typical role model for that. Apart from the laser beam, it is more or less free of any emissions.

    In the AA role you need a very strong C3 capability and datalinks to allow emission free targeting. In most cases the stealth fighter will have to use its radar, which anounces its presence, even it is is an AESA radar. That does not mean it can be targeted though.

    In the end stealth is always a huge advantage.

    Rafale is the the second best western aircraft currently in service. Second only to F-22 and it will get close to it once Rafale gets the AESA and the 90kn M88ECO engines. So it is far from irrelevant. Without political interference it would have sold like sliced bread.

    It clearly depends on what you are talking about. Government specified and funded military programs are often over engineered. Because they end up with a “one size fits all and does everything” solution.
    In the commercial sector however, European designs are doing quite well and there have been ni complaints. Be it Airbuses or Eurocopter and Augusta helicopters. They are giving the competition a run for the money. But other countries are not better. Look at the recent US helicopter programs. Simple specified and commercial available Lakota goes well, military specified ARH not.
    More interestingly countries which are famous for theur robust military products are having a hard time in the commercial sector.

    Mostly over the own carrie group against a first rate enemy, yes. But Rafale is the better plane compared to Typhoon.

    Not necessarily. Rafale and EF-2000 are here now, while the J-XX and PAK-FA are probably at least a decade away from serious squadron service. The J-XX is basically irrelevant as nobody in the Pacific theater seems keen on buying a Eurocanard when they can get a FLANKER or F-15 variant instead, but the PAK-FA should be a serious problem if it achieves the goal of Raptor-style stealth characteristics.

    And all this just shows how pointless and obsolete Typhoon is. I hope that Tranche 3 will be cancelled. It is the biggest waste of money in history. Kind of like buying Spitfires in 1955.

    You can´t compare EF with F-35 or F-22 as the design has to fulfil different criteria. The American jest were designed to enter a highly protected airspace and fight there. The EF (and Rafale) where designed to stay over friendly airspace and shoot down enemy planes approaching that airspace.

    While ground attack was an important mission the European designers went for the carriage of stand-off weapons, instead of designing an airframe that is able to deliver cheaper munition from inside the enemy defences.

    Pak-FA und J-XX however seem to follow the american design and will render the european fighters obsolete, as Pak-FA and J-XX will be able to defeat the euro canards in the airspace they are designed to protect.

    Back in the later 70s MBB put TVC into equation for PST manoeuvrability. That TVC wasn’t selected in the end for the basic configuration doesn’t mean the aircraft wouldn’t be PST capable.

    True Eurojet has shown a TVS demonstrator in Spain and tested it. The partner nations just did not order this option and so it was not integrated.

    That depends on the version. Early export versions where a bitch. Hard to fly and maintain, while having not better weapons ir radar then MiG-21 of the same generation. R-23s were a bitch and next to useless, while R-60k was up to AIM-9L in most parameters.

    Apart from that, in the early version the pilot had to select the angle of the wings, which was quite challenging and you could quickly and easily damage the plane in a dogfight by changing the wings position too late.

    Typhoon was a waste of time and resources. It was stupid when the program started to have EF and Rafale and as Rafale was even going to be carrier capable and given the perfect record of Dassault´s fighters Rafale should have been picked. But national pride made that impossible.
    But there were other points, when the program should have been terminated. The first was with the end of the cold war. The need for such a pure air defence fighter disappeared with the Russian threat.
    It was the time when stealth had shown its importance with the F-117 and many partner nations wanted to reduce spending for military hardware. So it was a plane nobody really wanted and that was obsolete before it entered production.

    Spain, the UK and Italy should have taken leased F-16s for any immediate need and put all the money into F-35 which all will have to buy as harrier replacements anyway. Germany could have bought Rafale, Grippen or F-18s.

    Now all partner nations will have to pay for an obsolete plane with little growth potential for the next 40 years.

    MiG was never really tested and when the money was available SU dominated the business in Russia. It sure haf potential. How much, we will never know.

    SU-37 was a rechnology demonstrator. It was designed to test a FSW configuration. It is reasonable to beleive that Russia came to the same conclusion as other countries, that the drawbacks are not worth the effort for an operational fighter plane.
