Pure political decision.
Oh, I think Vietnam would not mind getting Meteors and IRIS-T. French products could be an option, but I am not sure due to colonial history.
Vietnam could indeed be interesting. They have taken some Western equipment recently and it seems like the serviceability of the Huey fleet has improved lately. As a replacement for the MiG-21 I would not rule out Gripens or F-16s.
After the “Peace Rhine” up-date. Going from 1980-1984. So Norm 81 fits better to ALQ-119.
F-4 Phly-Out Wittmund:
Just a first pic from the days. Things to come with the past in the backgorund.
Well, the Marines could take over the A-10s from the USAf for CAS and operating from FOBs. Add a a few Sqn. of Super Hornets and Growlers and they would be good.
I would think 120 JF-17, 110 J-10 and some K-8 trainers. Should be enough to invade Spain.
The F-16 is from the next generation. Viggen, F-5 and MiG-23 are the closest contemporaries.
3 days to go to the Base visit.
The whole idea has PC-21 written all over it.
Cost has zero to do with whether or not the U.S. will or will not go to war, period.
Probably as stupid as true. The middle eastern adventures prove just that. Not only has the US taken a beating in the field, they also ruined their economy in the process. And the funny thing is that in 3 years you have Iran controlling Iraq and the Taliban back in power in Afghanistan, but the US will still have the debts of those wars.
Just think of it for a second before buying from Pakistan or China becomes inconsistent with politics – A JF-17 two seater powered by a single M-88. Cost: 15 million. maintenance equal or better than Gripen. Ability to customize to your hearts content. In addition, France would not need to pay a penny for them – purchase could be offset 100%
Sometimes the best solutions sound the most off-base.
This take a Chinese airframe add French M88 engine and avionics and share the licence for both with China. Both parties happy. China is the rising super power in military hardware, it is a good move to get a feet into that market.
Who are they going to deter in the Pacific? North Korea should see little difference between F-15 or F-16 launching AIM-120 at their mostly vintage fleet. And China is too strong to risk an armed conflict anyway – F-15 or no F-15.
Without f15c d a big capability gap will open up, possibly the biggest gap of them all.
Really? Do you need them for air policing in the US? And could the US afford a war in which the F-16s and F-22 won´t be enough in the next 3 decades?
Sad to see them go but there’s truth in it.
USA has to ask it self: “what is it that we want our military to do and what assets do we need to accomplish this?”
In fact I think the question is, how much military can we still afford and then what can be done with it?
It comes down to what kind of wars the US will likely fight in the future. I think it’s pretty obvious the kind of large scale COIN war we saw in Iraq and Afghanistan are unlikely to occure in the future simply because it would be madness for any American President to fight a major land war. There’s no political will for it. Without huge numbers of boots on the ground, you don’t need the A-10 to protect them. Whether we’re talking about Iran or North Korea scenarios, the B-1B would be more useful than the A-10. If forced to chose between them, the A-10 will have to go.
As said above, the US does not ask itself which wars it will be fighting, but which wars it still can afford to fight. It is the experience from Vietnam all over again. Fighting a war while keeping the states budget and taxes in peace time mode will kill oyur budget. the good thing is that today there is no Cold War going, so the US can afford to reduce the armed forces much more. The US has reached a point, where hanging on to old planes and equipment to avoid a capability gap, will just create a bigger gap in the future, as there no money to keep the old stuff in service and introduce the new equipment. Every F-15 flight hour costs 36.000$ a F-16C roughly half. This means you can keep 2 F-16 for one F-15C. Or One F-16 + 16.000$ for new planes. Going by a 180 planes fleet and 1000 hours per year for each plane. This is 2.880.000.000 if you just fly an F-16 instead of an F-15.
