JG484 and all recorded and illustrated in Vol.1.

Thankya Peter!!!Knew there was a story behind it….All I knew was that the “ehem” bits were well away from the scrapping so were left in the grass till found.

There was also one of those many semi-circular firewall tops that were and are still around..

Sigh to have one of them 🙁

    3 more early Australian aircraft

The first three types to enter Australian military service with the Australian Flying corp are being shown at the Museum of Australian Army Flying at Oakey. These include the Boxkite(ex Phoenix Flyer),replica Deperdussin built by Jack Gillies, and the Bleriot 1911 replica built by assistant curator Peter White.Story and pics are in the newsletters here..

But, back to the main theme of the story, there is far more to the affair than has been mentioned.

    Thanks PeterAsh,
Yes there are more stories and tales from wild colonial bushland to come yet..A rumour is just that until proven true or false.

They’re there, all right, under the Oakey drive-in theatre,” he said. An old mine, The Federal, passed under the now-disused drive-in and was the closest to the airfield. It closed in 1943 and two separate sources believed one driver was never away long enough to make the round trip to Brisbane.

Both men believe the witness to be reliable, but because he was taken to the site at night by another man he was unable to pinpoint a location. However, it was only a short walk from the witness’s house in Federal Street, near the mine of the same name.

If you want pics it is only 5 min walk from where I live to the site in question.

Peter do you know how many Royal Navy Seafires were out here at 6AD?Were they just out here for repairs or were they assembled and test flown here?

Mike how was the Whirlwind constructed?Know it was alli but was it like a Spit,a Me109,P40,Hawker tube construction??When slicing up a 3D model it makes life easier knowing the structure type inside.

I agree, but with respect, this thread is all talk, and is all jolly nice. But it is a long long way from a Whilrwind, and one certainly isn’t going to materialise out of my two boxes of twisted junk!

Dunno bout that.Few people said the same thing about us building a Spity from scratch.

Also one of my mates is involved in a rare Jerry dive bomber project designing up drawings off twisted balls of metal.

Theres a hole in the ground

Lot of country round these parts…Got a shovel?
Have seen a photo of a Spit or three out here with the firewall canted forward.Later Mk of Spit or just lazy scrappers reefing the firewall forward to get fuel tanks out is open to conjecture.Mine shafts are around but they all have been blasted and backfilled in the old days.Don,t want some Spit enthusiust falling down them do we.:diablo:
The ground out here is a mix of black soil and red clay so not easy at best of times to dig by hand.Believe me we have tried.

Give the guys a break..Trying to replicate 60 year old paint is hard at the best of times. There was not a consistent batch of paint found anywhere during WW2..Spray painters know there are a lot of things that can change the finished job.
Wasn,t there a batch of RLM paint found a few years ago?
It,s like the question how many different shades of Olive Drab were there.
I like the scheme, shiney or not.

Hi guys just jumping in for a few words.

With our experience with rebuilding from wreckage full aircraft including Spitfires (EN199 from our of a Malta Scrap yard well cut up and The Loch Doon Spitfire Mk11 currently in rebuild)and scratch building aluminium aircraft we would be willing to help anyone to construct a full size static aircraft using whatever drawings, photographs and profiles as well as wreckage is available to create a full size static airframe.

So the offer is there if anyone or group of individuals is brave enough to put up the material to help the project and a budget for the build materials etc.

Its a great shame that so many historic airframes are missing and we would love to help redress this situation so that examples can go on display. And it can be axis types we dont mind there are some significant an dimportant aircraft from the other side very sadly either lacking or in tiny numbers.

You know how to find us !!!!!!!!!!!

    Mike

Yep have been following your work and thanks for the wings..am still in shock on the detail on them..hope you have a website up to show progress..

I still have a couple of A4 copier boxes full of bits.

That stuff is like gold to restorers..Building an aircraft from scratch is like a jigsaw puzzle in reverse.Look what Cees has done and the Stirling guys, also the Bluebird crew at what they do.Get the outside shape done then start filling in the details. The amazing Whirlwing Cockpit replica is what can be done.
