Hampden Instrument Panel reconstruction
Tim,
The drawings are available, I have an index of all surviving drawings. I sent an initial list of 127 and almost got a heart attack when I got a message what it would cost me, times three as a total of 380 drawings would be needed for a similar result of the Halifax.
When Harry Fraser Mitchell was still active he would pick up the boxes from Duxford and go the the local copyshop. His prices were very realistic. Also I was told the IWM board recently decided not to hand out any drawings to just anyone.
Don’t know if it has anything to do with liability issues, but I can understand their point of view.

Well, reality steps in.:o
Due to circumstances the Hampden cockpit will not be built. Hopefully a small section of the forward fuselage including the full instrument panel can be made. Pity as I was looking forward to this project.
Does anyone have a 8+ boost gauge (fluorescent) and a port flap gauge (Anson style) lying about spare?
Will post pics as the instrument panel progresses.
Cheers

Thanks,
Yes I had seen it, it’s been there for months. If it was to be used on this
cockpit it would have been cut in half. Apart from that the perpsex is useless. No further plans to lenghten the cockpit. This is the final configuration.
If you look at earlier pics there is a legde at the back. We kept tripping over it and it looked like a balcony. a few weeks ago we were discussing this and at the same time had the same idea, why not lenghten the fuselage just a bit further. This way you get more idea of a fuselage, it would look better, both inside and outside. No plans for nose art, it will carry 13 mission symbols in yellow with red ones marking important developments in the history of this project.

Profetic words Tony,
The cockpit is growing a bit.
Also a view of the labels on the pilot’s overhead panel. These details really finish of the job.
Thanks to Frank Hop for taking the pics.

John,
I think that the Merlin Halifax spinner was unique to the type. I don’t think any other type in the RAF at the time used the same. There was a Hurricane flying (HAC’s?) that had a spinner that had the same blunt tip.
Hope this helps,
Cees

Andy,
I sent two pics of what you requested to your e-mail address last sunday.
Did your receive them?
Cees
Brian,
No pics of PN323?
I do hope that the cockpit will be refurbished and totally fitted out. It is in a bit of a mess inside. And the bombbay has a lot of corrosion. I looked under it several times.

I will have a look around the storage area tomorrow and let you know.
Yes they have a bead at the outer end of the stringer if you look at
the cross section.

Excellent Andy,
Absolutely fantastic news.
No one should be left behind. Only now can
the next of kin start to close a chapter.
Cheers

Yes, I was aware of that one and have made some attempts to obtain it from the RAF Museum, even if on loan at the time. The even have two, the other is a sectioned example for instructional purposes. The Trustees were very clear, they are not a warehouse where you can buy items. I can understand that but having one Halifax and three throttle boxes……
The one advertised in flypast was offered for 65 pounds at the time and was said to have come from a museum. That’s all I remember.
Now, any Hampden throttle boxes lying in your garage?
Cees
Ross and others,
Very interesting thread, thanks.
Are there any possibilties to get photographs of aircrew
in a similar fashion?
