Good Thread Hijack.
TSR2 Helmets
The Mk2 helmets used in TSR2 were not of standard fitment, quite like the suits.
This TSR2 helmet belongs to a firend of mine, I’m sure he won’t mind me sharing these images.
The helmets had a special visor arrangement, see photos:
The little hoop at the back of the visor hinge housing was to attach onto a lanyard from the seat. Upon ejection, the helmet is pulled back, and the visor snaps down.

I have a Helmet realted to TSR2, It’s the one in my Avatar. It belonged to Len Dean, head of aircraft development aircraft at Warton. Here is an image of him on July 8th 1964 wearing it near the undercarriage of TSR2 on an engine test:

And here’s Len Dean’s helmet now, it’s a standard Mk2a:
All of my photos can be seen at: http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/Scott.Bouch
The TSR2 helmet photos are in the folder from Cockpitfest 2009
This could be a very interesting discussion…
Cheers, Scott.
I’ve always been fascinated by this image, unlucky incident, but amazingly lucky timing!
It really is a “one in a million” photograph…
Scott.
Perhaps it has been posted earlier in this lengthy thread but always one of my favourites. The presenter’s exclamation makes it!
that makes me laugh every time i see it!!!
I apologise if this one has already been posted, but I think it’s pretty incredible:

Ah, no those Lift doors were manual, and would have your fingers off!
So not another one for the melting pot!
Rear/Front door opening button of a 1950’s Lift???
Building Materials collector!!!!
If you are going to scan (if you get a copy) I’d be very interested in a .jpg of it… if that doesn’t infringe any copyrights…. 😉
Cheers for sharing this interesting story! Scott.
That is a really nice idea, if he’s happy to do that!
I’ve recently been doing some digging around to find out some more about my (well, Len Dean’s) helmet… Hoping to get in touch with Warton’s (now retired) safety equipment officer of the time! We’ll see, I’ll call hime when I get a minute.
Scott.
Glad you like, hehe…
Name the part

It would be amazing to borrow this for next Cockpitfest:

And borrow the seat from Coventry air museum, mannequin sat in it with TG’s helmet on… hey-presto a TSR2 makes it to Cockpitfest! Museums willing of course… Dream on…..
I’m only aware of 3 existing seats, one at FAST, one at Cosford, and one at Coventry. Are there any more out there?
At the next ‘fest I’ll be showing my helmets, plus a WORKING Lightning T5 radio bench-top setup, so people can listen to exactly what a lightning pilot would have heard….
Scott.
Many years of service:
Lightning T5 XS452
Lightning T5 XS458
And have briefly touched upon:
Vampire
Buccaneer
Vulcan
Cockpits:
Sea Vixen
Jet Provost
Lightning

Very kind, sharing the wealth! Hope it get’s used!
