Scott,
I am an aerobatic teams historian and have lots of photos of the team, mainly the aircraft though. Don’t have access to my archives here, but will check them when I get home tonight.
AMB! you’re an absolute star!! 😎
Thank you for taking the time to have a look through, it’s really appreciated, as my evidence to work from so far is very limited!
My main area of interest is the back and top of the helmet, as I’ve got a front/side image.
Also at the back, the comms cable seems to exit through what I assume to be a rubber grommet, but I don’t have any evidence at all on it… it may just hang down form inside the helmet… If it was a grommet, i need to know it’s position..
I need to make my mind up on this before drilling a big hole in the back of the shell!
Many thanks indeed, Scott. :D:D:D
Twin Otter – thank you very much!
I’d been looking at the National Archives at Kew, but they have vary little in the way of photographs, however the RAF museums navigator facility is good (http://navigator.rafmuseum.org/) but no images of what I’m after..
I’ll see if I can contact someone at Waddington, you never know what they may have!
Cheers a lot, Scott.
Bump…
Is there an RAF archive, to find 56 squadron photos?
Cheers, Scott
Surely someone has some Firebirds photos…?
Hi – Clicking relays etc.. you’re correct, there is a soft start system… I’v got my hands on one of these too! three relays:
One connects the supply via a big resistor
The second shorts out the resistor after a shore time period (controlled by a timed controller unit)
The third is an undercurrent trip relay to disconnect the supply as and when the engine starts to pull away (and hence the motor current drops)
I’ve been in touch with a flying Hunter group, and had some very useful advice.. to do this conversion for flying aircraft is a big cost, but luckily this project is not flying!
Cheers for all the interest and input! Scott.
Scott, I would hate to send you down a blind alley in your search, but the only 112V DC electrical system that I know of was in the Valiant – also equipped with Avons. Perhaps there was a scheme to use them on Canberras in place of the cartridge starters but getting several batteries together to raise 112V is no mean feat and maybe the idea didn’t progress further because of this. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vickers_Valiant What you can do with this information to lead you to the electric starters info I have no idea, but good luck anyway.
Hi mate, the motors I have are rated up to 120V DC (the higher voltage you can safely apply, the lower the current, and hence less chance of cable fires etc.. due to overcurrent), but 112 was also used on the Comet, and apparently also some turboprop aircraft too.
The information I’m after, is simply full load current when cranking an Avon, duration to get the engine up to 1000 RPM etc…. so any info which may contain some technical details would be helpful in designing the electrical system… I’ve found some pretty handsome kit to provide the DC, but I want to do a little maths to be sure i’m on the right track before trying anything “live”!
Cheers, Scott.
Yes, you’re right, there a a few Hunters out there which have been converted, I’ll try and get in touch with some of the Kemble guys…
Cheers, Scott.
It’s photos like that that conjure up warm fuzzy feelings of what was once magnificent… being a child of the 80’s I missed out on most things exciting in the field of Aviation!
Sorry old chap, Canberra’s have never been electric start equipped!
We are still starting using lovely dirty cartridges courtesy of Plessey and their triple breach starter 😀
Any talk of electric start was at a feasability study level only I am afraid – alas, it never happened.
Oh ok dude,
Since talking with Rod and the help he supplied for the electric start concept, I just assumed you had gone gown the electric route!!
Do you get your Carts refilled? or new ones made? or is it like Avpin – one day there will be no more…
Cheers, Scott.
Yes, that’s just the paperwork we’re after!!!
I’ve sent Stacey a PM about it..
Are your starters 24V or 112V? What is your electrical setup for starting?
Many thanks indeed!!! :o)
Scott
Does Airbase have a website?
I want to have a look around, but would prefer to do it when there is going to be something flying! How does one “book” to go along? does it cost much?
Cheers, Scott.
Just popped out at lunch to go to the Post Office in Brinklow (work at Rolls Royce Ansty) and had the pleasent sight of a Nimrod flying low overhead!
A great sight that you don’t get to see every day!
Cheers, Scott.
As I’d not been reading the threads much, I was totally un-enpecting it!
Whoops, should read the threads more closely!
Oh ******…. I’d planned on going this year! Living about 5 miles away I was ashamed to have never been before!
Saw the air display last year from the Narborough Road (near the old Dovecote pub), was supposed to be buying a new bathroom suite with my wife… on hearing the first Merlin we were straight outside (with the shop staff too!).. we were right under the approach!!:D
In between very low passes we’d return to the more mundane activities of shopping, dashing outside for each display! the Vulcan was immense… saw the pyro smoke in the distance.
A good day was had; air display, and bathroom purchased!
Very sad to hear no show this year, looking forward to giving it my full support if it happens next year!!!
Cheers, Scott.
Great, thank you.
